Rationale
Marks a source of potable (drinking) water available to the general public. This is invaluable to walkers in the countryside and also to cyclists and joggers in built-up areas in hotter countries. It is also interesting for people who want to refill the clean water tanks of their RV or boat.
This feature would deprecate waterway=water_point, because sources of drinking water are not limited to waterways.

I also prefer drinking_water because it is easier to understand for non-native-english-speakers. I changed the tags I already put into the map to drinking_water and hope, that there will be a votation soon as I am putting new spots frequently and I'm quite sad they don't appear on the map right now. For the pictogram the suggested one (#37, see Discussion from the first proposal) from Bureau of Land Management (BLM) National Science and Technology Center (NSTC) which had been set to be public domain would fit well and is quite intuitive to understand. I don't know how to vote or put a voting request so if anyone could do this, it would be great. I also suggest to add another tag which would be functional = yes / no, because some of the fountains are not working at the moment, but could be repaired in the future. Instead of deleting the fountain / drinking-water-resource completely, it would be helpful to be able to mark it as not functional. functional = yes could be default and therefore not needed to put explicitly. --dieterdreist 16:18, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

- Functional = yes / no implies a measure of accuracy no map can ever provide. You can't even be sure if it's functional when you're entering it, let alone when a map end user looks at it. Martijn van Exel
