A annexe is a small self contained apartments, collages, or small residential building on the same property as the main residential unit.

Known as a granny suites or ADU in the United States, and a granny annexes in England, and a granny flat in Australia.

Distinction from building=detached

A detached house typically has an official address where the annexe might not. Instead the owner may informally install a second letter box with a prefix after the house number to give an address to the annexe.

Planning and approvals

In some jurisdictions you need planning approval to construct an annexe on your property. Since it's good practice to map what's on the ground, an illegally annexe or one constructed without planning approvals would still be mapped.
