A  bastion is a structure projecting outward from the curtain wall of a  fortification, most commonly angular in shape and positioned at the corners of the fort.

How to map

Place a node node at the centre or draw an area area along the outlines of the bastion and tag it with defensive_works=bastion.

Tags used in combination

  • name=* - if the bastion is named. Do not use the name of the fortification to tag individual bastions.
  • ref=* - for the number of the bastion. Note that counting bastions was usually done counter-clockwise.
  • heritage=* - if the bastion has a heritage status. If only the entire fortification has a heritage status, do not use heritage tags for individual bastions.
  • start_date=* - year of completion
