A spring box or spring catchment is a structure which is designed and built for protecting and catching groundwater from a natural spring. The spring box functions to protect the spring water from contamination, and provides a point of water collection. It is usually built out of non-permeable material such as concrete, brick or stone. In many instances it also acts as the principal water storage for a household or village water supply.
In hilly and mountainous areas, spring catchments are more commonly used than wells for water supply. In contrast to a man_made=water_well, no pump is usually required.
