A [W] public aquarium is the aquatic counterpart of a zoo with living aquatic animals for public viewing. Public aquariums feature many tanks larger than those kept by home aquarists, as well as smaller tanks. A large aquarium can span multiple buildings with not only tanks but also indoor and outdoor pools.

How to map

Set a node node as a landmark or draw a closed way area along the outline of the involved area and tag it tourism=aquarium. Add name=* and other usual tags, such as operator=*, opening_hours=*, fee=* and addr:*=*.

If the aquarium is a large attraction, containing several buildings and outdoor spaces, map the entire campus area with the aquarium tags. If the aquarium is just one building, the aquarium tags can be added to the mapped building or the node can be placed inside the building area.

Disambiguation

One quirk of the English language is that the term “aquarium” may be used to describe both a large-scale tourism attraction (similar to a zoo) and an individual water-filled vivarium (similar to an exhibit in a zoo). The tourism=aquarium tag should only be used to map the first type of aquarium. To match the zoo tagging, individual fish tanks or exhibits may be tagged as attraction=animal + animal=fish. There is also some usage of man_made=fish_tank which could also be used alongside this tagging.
