State of 3DMR.eu

Tried to visit the website today, and I was warned that it is a suspicious website. Is this just a personal issue? --IanVG (talk) 17:42, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

I believe this was the result of an expired HTTPS certificate (common webserver housekeeping issue). This should no longer be a problem. --Tordanik 12:42, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

Advantage over Wikicommons 3D Model Library

Should I upload my model to both the wikicommons 3D model library? Should we link to the category that some OSM models are already stored in? What is the benefit of uploading to 3DMR versus uploading to wikicommons?

I get the feeling when I look at the category on wikicommons of OSM models that they are primarily geared for large more complex structures (such as bridges and buildings) and less so for smaller objects (like benches, waste bins, and poles)- am I wrong? Would it help if I uploaded (let's say) different models of benches and tables? And if I did that, would it be better to still upload these kinds of models to 3DMR? --IanVG (talk) 20:23, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

IMO, important benefits of 3DMR are:
  • A file format that, unlike STL, supports textures, materials and other features of modern 3D graphics. (Although 3DMR's OBJ format is no longer the best choice either; nowadays it would be preferable to use glTF.)
  • Conventions for models that make it possible to embed them in a larger 3d scene when linked from OSM (such as conventions on which directions they should face and where the origin should be).
  • Models under open licenses that make it practical to use them for this purpose, whereas most models on Wikimedia Commons use licenses that, while still open, are comparatively more restrictive.
Depending on the specifics, some nice (good looking, but performance-friendly) 3d models could be extremely useful for rendering OSM data in 3d. Do you already have some use case in mind? --Tordanik 21:51, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
