Unfortunatly I can't come :( But my plans for the 3d repository still exist and I hope I can start in autum this year with a prototype. Would be interested in knowing your results --!i! 07:49, 26 July 2011 (BST)
Results
Hi, are there any results on the meeting? --!i! 13:11, 17 September 2011 (BST)
- We mostly talked about building mapping - how data should be mapped, but also about the tools that could be used to survey data such as building heights (suggestions for this included simple smartphone apps, laser measurement and image recognition techniques). After a bit of discussion about the data model, consensus seemed to be that we should start "small" as far as data within the OSM database is concerned: with a few additional attributes for buildings and roofs. For the most part, tags already exist but are not consistently defined. Tagging conventions should be documented on a wiki (proposal?) page; however, I don't know whether any participant of the workshop has already begun to create such a page.
- Regarding roof shape mapping, the two primary alternatives seem to be geometry-based roofs (i.e. with additional ways or nodes) and purely tag-based roofs. Arguments were given for both approaches. Probably both can be useful: tags for the majority of simple roofs, and explicit geometry for more complex roofs.
- Generally, we also agreed that renderer/application support is an important factor for evaluation and adoption of any tagging scheme, so I'm currently adding roof shape rendering to OSM2World. Peda is setting up an OSM2World-based tile server. SunCobalt is independently experimenting with building rendering.
- It was noted that the increasing complexity of the OSM database could become more manageable with editor support for thematic layers. The idea to add unusual and/or prominent buildings as 3D models was also mentioned during the workshop, but afair none of the participants has any specific plans for this.
- I hope that other participants will correct and extend my rough retelling of the events. :) --Tordanik 23:41, 17 September 2011 (BST)
