Talk list discussions on Bitcoin tagging regarding CoinMap

- Just saw this discussion on reddit which suggests that it isn't serving coinmap well either, to have non-bricks'n'mortar companies listed. -- Harry Wood (talk) 23:23, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
Tagging list tag discussion
Were these tags discussed on the tagging list and or voted on? --Emacsen (talk) 12:24, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- I do not think so. I will mark the tags as not having been discussed yet in the tagging discussion list. logictheo (talk) 10:04, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
Here you can find some discussions:
- November 2013, "Bitcoin and Online shops"
- January 2014, "Bitcoin and Online shops"
- June 2014, "Bitcoin ATM (amenity=atm | currency:XBT=yes)"

online/offline
I don't like very much the online/offline subtag: probably we should choose a better one (actually all bitcoin transactions are online, if they are registered into the blockchain).--Stemby (talk) 08:36, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
Coinmap.org details
Anyone know if the code is available for coinmap. Also what kind of updates cycle is it on? (or it uses overpassAPI?). We could make separate Coinmap.org wiki page for these details I guess -- Harry Wood (talk) 23:34, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
Tools to track tag coverage over time
For each type of map element which accepts payment, most are not tagged with this Bitcoin tag.
We need a tool to allow editors to go through each "unknown" value to make it a "yes" or a "no" --Jamiegray (talk) 13:46, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
Downgrade payment tag
I'm writing here to ask for feedback about the terms used in this page; we have two sections on how to tag, a payment and a currency section. With the payment one given a slight preference simply by being the first.
But when we look at the currency page here we see written:
Bitcoin is its own currency, not only a payment method. Consider using currency:XBT=*.
What would people say if we swap the payment and currency sections in order to indicate that logically crypto currencies, as the name implies, are more suitably tagged using the currency tag? Or maybe, as someone on IRC suggested, we simply drop the payment description here. Kaartjesman (talk) 15:37, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
- without any comment or objection, the motion is carried :-) Kaartjesman (talk) 08:38, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
"bitcoin:accepted"
What is the meaning of this new key? What does it convey that "currency:XBT" doesn't? --Mueschel (talk) 18:19, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
- On reflection, nothing. I thought I had seen that tag used before, but I see there are only those nodes I have tagged. The new lightning tags are sufficient. I will Update the Bitcoin page accordingly --Nathan (talk) 18:44, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
- Please reference the generic page Cryptocurrency for details. One specific point is that you should not use 'payment' for currencies (bitcoin is a currency). I guess lightning is a payment method, not a currency (is it?). Confusing to have that different, please give that some thought. Kaartjesman (talk) 18:54, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
- IMO the new comment relating to payment:bitcoin needs to be undone. Services such as BTC Map use this to distinguish between 'on-chain' Bitcoin payments (using payment:bitcoin) and 'off-chain' Bitcoin payments via Lightning (using payment=lightning). Sorry, I didn't see the discussion tab before making the changes to the page. --Nathan (talk) 19:40, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
- The new comment is the one I wrote about how 'payment:' is not the right prefix for a currency. This was decided on a long time ago, with a proper review period (see the section above this one in the talk page). Basically the project you selected should check both the legacy tag as well as the 'currency:XBT' tag. This is already the case for quite some time. Kaartjesman (talk) 19:47, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
- The BTC Map project does use currency:XBT to determine if Bitcoin is accepted as a currency. It then uses the payment tag for 'how' that Bitcoin is accepted. payment=bitcoin denotes a specific 'on-chain' payment 'method' using the 'currency' XBT. It's like currency:EUR and then payment:visa. Perhaps it should be payment:onchain instead to avoid ambiguity, but that ship has sailed for now. --Nathan (talk) 19:56, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
- currency:XBT and payment:bitcoin mean the exact same thing. One is the new one, the payment type is the old one that should slowly be phased out. When the Cryptocurrency page was created that was at its basis the reason to avoid exactly this confusion. Please feel free to open an issue on their tracker pointing this out. Kaartjesman (talk) 20:16, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
- How do we distinguish between Lightning XBT payments and on-chain XBT payments then? Currency:XBT is non specific on which payment methods are supported. Nathan Day (talk) 20:46, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
- I honestly have no idea why you would want that. A merchant will typically accept both or neither, right? This opinion seems supported by the very low usage of this tag. If this is really something that makes sense a mapper could use two or 3 tags on one point. Next to 'currency' you add your payment method (lightning). Personally, I'd say that adding the NFC version is one step too far. You can pay with the bitcoin currency, the level of convenience is really not relevant to tag. I suggest moving this convo to IRC or matrix or telegram where you can ask a more broad set of OSM mappers. Kaartjesman (talk) 22:24, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
- It is possible (and increasingly likely) merchants will accept Bitcoin only over Lightning, especially for small retail transactions. There are thousands of Lightning merchants globally, OSM is behind, which is what I would like to help with. Tagging
payment:onchain
The tag payment:onchain seems to get more and more popular - possibly due to BTC Map using this tag. I am not sure whether this is a good one. Imagine some shop offers Litecoin onchain payments - how to distinguish from Bitcoin onchain? I would propose something like:
payment:xbt:lightning=yes
payment:xbt:onchain=yes
payment:lightning_contactless
Aren't all Lightning payments contactless (by QR code)?
--Rene78 (talk) 02:53, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
- I think namespacing payment types is a good idea, but contactless origin seems to be in how OSM approached tagging NFC payment card terminals (Visa, MasterCard, etc.). Here is an example of how it works: https://www.boltcard.org/ --Igor 07:10, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
