Wikipedia seems to have an article for everything. Try this one for the city/town distinction (and an answer to the cambridge question): "City status in the United Kingdom"

Streetmap for mobile phones

I recently noticed the multiresolution data available on the OpenStreetMap server. Last year I wrote a small application to display map-tiles on J2ME mobile phones and since then I was searching for free multiresolution data! Now the new J2ME Cambridge streetmap for mobiles is available for free. I made the source code available as well (GPL).
