Talk:Cheat sheet
Existing Cheat Sheet
I have a PDF cheat sheet locally that was posted in the #osm IRC channel a while ago. It was from achadwick IIRC. I will upload it here later. --Colin Marquardt 11:33, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
- I remembered wrong, it was produced by User:Sward instead: http://bleah.co.uk/~simon/stuff/osm/mapfeatures/ --Colin Marquardt 20:42, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
- The cheat sheet was made by scraping Map Features with a script provided by User:Bobkare (written in Perl, uses Geo::OSM::MapFeatures), to produce a simple XML file. XSLT is used to generate XSL-FO which is used to create PS and PDF output. I’ll stick the stylesheets in the repository… just as soon as I have worked out why it currently doesn’t work.—Sward 22:55, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Inconsistent mapping?
Good luck with getting everyone to agree how to choose between footway, cycleway, path and track to gain consistency for your cheat sheets. ;) --EdLoach 12:34, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
- It would be great to put a consistent set of these tags onto the cheat sheet. However, following the religious Diskussions on the widely differing view on the matter I also have my doubts. Which does not mean we shouldn't try. --Nop 06:24, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
A5 & short cuts
Mapping a small city and forest ways I used 2x folded A4 OSM prints to put notes on it, putting in a pocket of a shirt or jacket, so A5 1x folded is a good format ;-)
For the notes I often use short cuts like "t3gri||" for "highway=track, tracktype=grade3, surface=gravel, smoothness=intermediate and "grass between sole tracks" (just no tag for it, I have to propose one... ;-) ). Might be it is a good idea to also define such short cuts (layout: bold letters inside a word), so such maps with notes on it may be evaluated more easy from other members of a group (mapping parties) or at http://www.walking-papers.org/ or ...
If there are to much tags it might be an idea to make separate cheat sheets, e.g. one for forest ways, one for POIs, ...

I don't think that a beginner would use all these properties of a track. If you know they exist you no longer need a cheat sheet! --Gary68 10:47, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Why A5?
I wonder why A5... I wonder where I would use that card. It seems I would use it in front of a computer to enter the data I collectd. When taking notes in the field it doesn't matter how I "tag" it on my notepad as long as I later know what I meant or what I saw! So A4/letter could take a lot more information. And I think that space is needed even without pictures/examples. I don't think there is space for a lot of pictures. --Gary68 10:45, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- An argument for A5 is that it is one way of breaking up the multitude of tags we have into bite‐sized chunks. It’s much easier to scan smaller amounts of text at a time to find what you want. I can imagine multiple A5 pages each containing a category of tags where you could flick through them to find a tag by category and then scan the page for the tags you want, similar to how you use index cards. In the A4 versions I made, you essentially have to scan through the sections until you find what you want, especially if you are not already familiar where each section is on the pages.Sward 18:21, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
Localizing the cheat sheet??
We in the US utilize the cheat sheet but often have to explain to mappers, just what a 'motorway' or a 'pitch' is. What we are considering in the DC area is to print on the back side of the cheat sheet, a 'translation' of terms unfamiliar to North American ears. I assume other OSM-ers internationally are doing similar?? - Caobhin
Survey Oriented
It seems to me that these cheat sheets are inappropriate for surveying, especially for new surveyors at mapping parties. I was wondering if anyone has tailored a cheet sheet for them. They need to know what features to capture as they're taking down notes. Which features are important and which features can be ignored (e.g. storm drains, parking restrictions). I'm interested in building a guidance document for them. Please contact me if you're interested.

Got this so far http://mappingdc.org/trac/wiki/CheatSheet Working on content first, will stylize later.
