Public Lands in Delaware
- 02/18/21 Boundaries of the public lands in Delaware don't follow the standards set out in the tag:boundary=protected_area instructions, nor United States/Projects.
I propose modeling the tagging after Pennsylvania/Public Lands. State Forests - Tackle this first. I have started tackling the public lands tagging in DE with the State Forests. I added a section to the Delaware wiki page for State Forests and made a table to identify the list of state forests in Delaware, links to relations and ways, and status. I would like to open this to discussion here for how this should be changed.
- 3/11/21 State Forests completed and documented on the Delaware page.
- 3/11/21 Begin work on State Wildlife Areas... augment the tagging info, below.
1) I propose the following regarding tagging
Tagging
For all state owned public lands in Delaware, the following tags may be used:
boundary=protected_area leisure=nature_reserve name=* ownership=state protected=perpetuity type=multipolygon (only if a relation)
Tagging of DE Public Lands
protect_class is guided by Key:protect_class
- protection_title=*
- protect_class=*
- operator=*
- owner=*
- website=*
- wikipedia=*
- IUCN Category
State Forest
- protection_title=State Forest
- protect_class=7
- operator=DE Forest Service
- owner=State Department of Natural Resources
- website=https://agriculture.delaware.gov/forest-service/
- wikipedia=en:List of Delaware state forests
- IUCN Category - Other Conservation Area
State Wildlife Area
- protection_title=State Wildlife Area
- protect_class=4
- operator=DE Division of Fish and Wildlife
- owner=State Fish and Wildlife
- website=https://dnrec.alpha.delaware.gov/fish-wildlife/wildlife-areas/
- wikipedia=en:List of Delaware state wildlife areas
- IUCN Category - Other Conservation Area
Ref: https://maps.usgs.gov/padus/ Ref: https://opendata.firstmap.delaware.gov/datasets/delaware-public-protected-lands (preferred for shapefiles)
In addition, the following tags can be present if applicable:
website=* wikidata=* wikipedia=* gnis:feature_id=*
Additional GNIS tags can be present, but are not necessary since such information can be found through the feature id.
Discouraged Tagging
Absolutely NO LANDUSE should be associated with public lands. While it may appear that a State Forest is mostly wooded and it would be appropriate to add a natural=wood tag, this is usually a gross oversimplification. It is preferable to add landuse features as separate polygons.
In addition, the following tags are discouraged. If you see these, verify that they can be replaced with something else:
leisure=park, this tag may be acceptable for small, manicured state parks. If this is the case, use this tag in place of leisure=nature_reserve. boundary=national_park, this tag should be reserved for de jure national parks. park:type=*, deprecated, use protection_title=* instead. boundary:type=*, deprecated, use protection_title=* instead.
- 2) tract names rendering...
Two of the state forests are represented as multipolygons. There are subsections of the State Forests in DE that are called 'tracts' and are specifically named with tract names. In order for the tract names to appear in a renderer, it seems they need to be in the 'name' field for the boundary way or relation. Tract names are important, because much of the literature (online and printed, on site) is bound to a particular tract, by name. Where tract names are handled in a similar fashion for other public lands in Delaware, they, too will be included in the 'name' field.
- 3) Source of boundary data for Public Lands
2/22/2021 I've also noticed that the boundaries of State Parks don't match those from the PADUS database. I found out who put some of these in place (gellmenel) and have messaged the user to inquire their source. I will correct them to the PADUS data if the source for these boundaries, as they currently stand, are not authoritative.
3/7/2021 I've found an additional source of public lands boundaries in Delaware and will consider these "authoritative" versus PADUS data: Firstmap Delaware - Delaware Public Protected Lands
