Continent model
The Earth page on the OSM wiki uses the seven continent model from wikipiedia. There is however some disprepency within Wikipidia for some countries about which continent they are in and I suggest we bottom this out at this point if we can. Problem cases as far as I can see.
Boundary between Australia and Asia: Notably where are New Zealand and New Guinea. Are they in the continent of Australia (as per continent article) or not (as per Australia article). Similarly for the Pacific Islands. Should we actually be using Wikipedia:Australasia as the name of the 'continent'? PeterIto 09:42, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- The "Continent" is usually named "Oceania", larger than just Australasia which is only a part of it: the other parts of Oceania are Melanesia (includes New Zealand), Polynesia, Micronesia, and remote islands of the Pacific (the Hawaii archipelago, generally handled as part of US, as if it was in "North America" in its unincorportated overseas territories, or Christmas Island, generally handled as part of Chile as if it was part of "South America" in its overseas, or Cliperton Island, generally handled as part of France in its overseas), and in the southeastern part of Indian Ocean (including subantarctic islands: the French Austral Territories, outside Antarctica and Africa, i.e. the Kerguelen Islands and the Crozet Islands, or some other Australian remote islands).
- A single chapter covering just "Australasia" would be extremely large, and would not work: Australia is big, and Australasia includes Papua New Guinea; New Zealand is too far away, and it's very likely that Australia would have more local chapters (at least one for the Southeastern states, another for the Northern states and territories, possibly one for Hobart), due to the extreme distance and difficulties of meeting across these locations, even if they share some common medias, and the very different landscapes and levels of development, and the huge task each area represents, using probably very different tools.
- New Zealand is more focused and the various other polynesian and melanesian archipelagos have their own local teams, working in their own languages, media coverage and very different conventions depending on countries). — Verdy_p (talk) 21:30, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Why was this page blanked?
Is the information now held on the OSMF web site? Is this page safe to delete? Jonathan Bennett 17:04, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
- I guess maybe this page is no longer needed since the the page Foundation/Local Chapters was reworded say that all chapters are "proposed" chapters at this stage, and so all should be listed there... I guess. Maybe Ivan can clarify -- Harry Wood 21:59, 11 July 2012 (BST)
