So, the simple rule of thumb seems to be that while the word geocode is not to be used it's still ok to use the verb geocoding or the word geocoder. --JaakkoH (talk) 14:31, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

To the extreme and beyond

A trademark is only protected when it can be confused to be referring to the company name or product. F.e. the name "Apple" is trademarked, but I'm prefectly allowed to use the tag crop=apple in an orchard. As using other trademarks there makes no sense, but other fruits do make sense.

The word "apple" is part of the normal English language, and therefore can't be banned when used like before. Similarly, the verb "to geocode" is a valid English verb, with conjugations and derived words like "geocoding", "geocoder", "geocoded". When I use the sentence "I'll geocode this list of addresses", everyone knows that this refers to the verb, and not to the company. When you replace it with other company names, it makes no sense. --Sanderd17 (talk) 10:52, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
