volunteer activation - how?

I'm missing one more question: "What channels are used to activate the volunteers?"

Possible answers (just a short brainstorm result):

• regular HOT mailing list
• special mailinglist just for activation purposes
• mass email (opt-in principle)
• RSS
• news column @ OSM homepage
• telephone chains
• press
• ...

Partner Organizations

There should be a process where we determine if this type of activation makes more sense for other organizations. Just because it involves a map doesn't mean it is the best use of HOT's resources. Maybe this needs better definition of our core skills? Meaning we collect damage, critical infrastructure and displacement of persons? Is there something else?
