Talk:Ireland/Open Data
OSi, OSi, why do you treat me so
OSi Copyright infecting some providers datasets
Issue - Datasets are listed on data.gov.ie or elsewhere as CC-BY 4.0. The terms and conditions calling out OSi copyright on some providers data portals makes it unclear as to OSi's stance. Is data being offered (in good faith) on data.gov.ie and other Irish govt data portals e.g. EPA, safe to use?
Fix - Obtain clarification from OSi directly on this - Feedback sent to DPER on this first to see if they can address it --DaCor (talk) 02:49, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
OSi boundary data releases are generally useless
Issue - OSi have deliberately degraded all of their boundary data to 20 meters meaning they are pretty useless for our needs.
Fix - Push for better quality data - Feedback sent to DPER on this first to see if they can address it --DaCor (talk) 02:49, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
OSi feature datasets are also generally useless due to arbitrary limits placed on them
Issue - One example is OSi's Lakes / Reservoirs dataset. For some unknown reason a limit has been set, "Water with area ≥ 0.4 km²", which means the file contains only 188 bodies of water.
By comparison, a similar file from the EPA contains 12,217 bodies of water
Fix - Push for files with no limits applied - Feedback sent to DPER on this first to see if they can address it --DaCor (talk) 02:49, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
OSi attribute data is often useless
Issue - The attribute data fields in a lot of OSi datasets look like they have been stripped of any useful information. One example is their Airfields dataset which doesn't even contain the name of the airfields themselves.
Fix - Push for full attribute information in any and all OSi datasets - Feedback sent to DPER on this first to see if they can address it --DaCor (talk) 02:49, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
EPA
EPA Portal
Why can I not just download the data. Instead I have to provide my email, complete a captcha and then wait to be emailed a link to download the file (wtf?!)
EPA data reuse
- Licenced as CC-BY 4.0 on data.gov.ie
- OSi copyright implications
- Commercial restrictions listed in FAQ - "It is not permitted to distribute to a third party for commercial benefit as it has been made freely available to all."

I have used the EPA Rivers data recently to add streams in my area and noted EPA Map Data as the source. It is open data and this is allowed. See https://www.osi.ie/about/open-data/ --Bjwyse (talk) 09:26, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
