I think that the table is great, the only thing i do not like is the "in OSM" column. It is NOT the OSM style to introduce table of addreviations, common names are used everywhere. I think that however difficult it might be in few cases to decide upon short common name of the order, it should be done for benefit of all. --Jakubt 22:42, 11 April 2012 (BST)

Polish equivalent of religious order shortcuts.

This is a list of abbreviations of religious orders and societies, monks and nuns.

  1. Monks
  2. Nuns

Now, to mark the church belonging to the convent, I use the tag operator=<name of religious order>, but I wonder as if it would be better to tag operator=<religious order abbreviation>. What do you think? --Władysław Komorek (talk) 16:57, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

Names of orders

I added the name system. I hope you are fine with it.--MeastroGlanz (talk) 13:41, 23 April 2017 (UTC)

Lowercase should be used in order to fulfil syntactic conventions for new values. Davileci (talk) 19:13, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

This is a freeform text, abbreviation, or artificial reference code. It's not limited to lowercase.
Rather, it seems the dozens ofcommunity=monks & community=nuns should be "deprecated" for duplication with community:gender=* .

Adding an order

Near my home there is a monastery belonging to the “Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus/Figlie del Sacro Cuore di Gesù/Institutum Filiarum Sacratissimi Cordis Jesu”, which I couldn’t find on your list. I think the abbreviation is F.S.C.G. For now I’m going to tag it as order=FSCG, but I was wondering if it would be fine to add it to the list.

Specificity

The Latin abbreviations in this table correspond to "families" of orders, not necessarily specific orders. I'm running into this problem now because this convent belongs to the Qui Nhơn Missionary Sisters of the Holy Cross, which is one of 24 congregations that use the LHC abbreviation. There are more examples of these order families at w:List of religious institutes. It would be better to set community=* to the common local name and use community:wikidata=* to distinguish. This way it won't be a problem if some features are tagged with more specific communities than others (e.g., Franciscans versus the Capuchins versus a province of the Capuchins). If a data consumer needs the Latin abbreviation, it could obtain the abbreviation from Wikidata. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 21:13, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

Hutterite Colonies

I have mapped over 550 hutterite colonies.

They are an anabaptist group of people from the 1500s. They are in 3 distinct categories.

leut
simply means people
daruis
was the leader of the Dariusleut
lehrer
means teacher. their leader was a teacher
schmied
means smith. their leader was a metal worker

I was contacted by someone saying my use of community and community:type was wrong.

I used community=hutterite and community:type=dariusleut/schmiedleut/lehreleut depending on which group they belonged to.

Can anyone help me sort this out? What should i use? Is this appropriate?

Thank you

Hi Tschettervictor,
I think that the tag is good community=Hutterite (with a first Cap). The use of community:type=* for the trend. The type is for the type of community: monastery, convent, intentional... I think of a community:family=* wider than the community=* so the Franciscans, Capucins, Poor Clares and Franciscan Sisters of any kind cloud take place. In that way, you could tag :
community:family=Hutterite + community=Dariusleut/Schmiedleut/Lehrerleur with first cap, with.
The use of the community tag on a place tag is not very common. Usually the the community tag is on a building, or a part of the building where the community share its life. But it is not a strict rule... But if you have a better place to put the community tag... Where does gather the community for taking decisions, for admitting a new member... Where must I go, where must I knock if I want to meet the community ? Surely not on fields nor on barns...
You can add a population=* tag on the place if you know it.

I have placed the node on the main dining area for each one.
Maybe I could use branch:dariusleut?
Would that be appropriate ? tschettervictor (talk) 18:37, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
I've a very bad connection to internet so I cant have a look. I had seen only [1]
Yes the branch=* is a good idea. And you can put some words on the Key:branch page to explain it.
FrViPofm (talk) 18:51, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
I have added branch= entry. Please edit so it’s organized as I only have one font I used.
So now it is community=hutterite with branch=dariusleut/schmiedleut/lehrerleut
Thank you for your help. tschettervictor (talk) 20:54, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
