Not 'type' but something descriptive
I would prefer something more descriptive than 'type'. For example 'function' as that would fit with botanical, arboretum, residential, civic, community. I do not know what a castle garden is? Is there a particular thing about them other than there proximity to a castle? Might be better to restrict discussion to one page on this - say https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:Proposed_features/Garden_specification#garden:type Warin61 (talk) 22:59, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
How to Map Rooftop Garden
I want to map a rooftop garden, but was wondering if I need to add a level key value to the area or not. Is there any consensus on necessary additional tags or values?--IanVG (talk) 23:03, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
- location=rooftop is a common tag for things on top of roofs. Common distinction (not in OpenStreetMap AFAIK) is between intensive and extensive vegetation. —Dieterdreist (talk) 01:45, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
How to Map Green Walls
We can find in Wikipedia what's a green Wall : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_wall Actually I don't see how to tag this type of garden. Here is an existing one. https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/258660334 But the tagging values are unknown Maybe a new value garden:type=green_wall applied to a way could be enough, but how can we deal to apply this tag to a way instead an area or a node.

- The restriction to a closed way makes sense for most garden types, but we should make an exception for garden:type=green_wall, by definition being a wall a linear way would be ideal. --Aharvey (talk) 05:17, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
Garden:type=public
Given that garden:type=public has 650 uses currently (didn't check the geographic dispersion), I'm a bit curious as to what the intent was in using the tag? Could anyone enlighten me?--IanVG (talk) 20:58, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
Add garden:type=landscaping
I am thinking of using the value garden:type=landscaping as the value for a bunch of different landscaped areas on my university campus. I discussed this issue before on the garden talk page, but am also mentioning it here, as I was unsure at first whether to put this value in combination with garden:style or garden:type. I believe type is the better classification here, as the garden spaces can vary in their aesthetic arrangement, in way that might be described differently. (I'm sure a landscape architect could provide some great input here). Thoughts?--IanVG (talk) 21:01, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
