If the wiki:symbol value is a complete URL, then it refers in the web frontend directly to the File: in the wiki.

Better solution is to change the web frontend as the complete URL contains of redundant data.

Just to clarify, a filename on wikimedia commons will work just as if it was hosted on OSM wiki without differentiating where it's located?
