Implied
There are some types of roads which are implied to be oneway, such as Motorways, but IMO, trunk roads shouldn't be oneway implied, as many of the trunk roads in Scotland are not dual carriageway (in fact, 4 miles of one trunk road is single track). The issue here is whether to have all trunk roads considered as one way unless explicitly tagged as not, or to have ones that are oneway tagged as such. Strictly speaking, motorways should be tagged as oneway, even if it is implied from the motorway status. Bruce89 20:00, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- There are short single carriageway (i.e. 2-way - no barrier) sections of motorway in the UK - and I'm sure elsewhere in the world - so motorway status shouldn't necessarily imply oneway. This example is a motorway in the North-West near to Lancaster. You can tell it's a motorway because of the all-blue sign ahead - but it's two way with just double-white lines between the directions. - Here is my example of a single-track trunk route, the A830. While I am on the subject, is there a tagging scheme for single-track roads? Bruce89 21:03, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- More examples of single carriageway/undivided trunk roads in the UK: The A40, for most of it's length, bits of the A406, almost all of the A487, almost all of the A4076, A477. A465, A438, A470, A44, A429, A418, bits of the A10.. Just go looking at most of the commercial motorway atlases, the trunk roads tend to be coloured in green. Now look at the undivided trunk roads. I just use highway=trunk, and for the ones that are one-way, I explicitly tag them as oneway=true. Welshie 10:00, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
- This goes back to the whole "are we tagging physical reality vs. official road classifications" discussion. For me a motorway/trunk has a divider in the middle and is always oneway. If it is not than its primary or whatever regardless of whether some traffic authority has decided to give it motorway status for some reason. But this is a difficult discussion and there is no way we can resolve that except by having many more tags which split up the different views on the same road. Joto 09:44, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
- Tagging official road classifications is *much* less subjective - and it's consistent with other atlases. I think if a road is dualled - we should tag each way as oneway=yes even if it's a motorway. It's less open to ambiguity. Richard B 13:52, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
