COVID
It seems quite extreme? I understand that in many places it will be necessary to delay meeting/mapping parties/etc but it seems quite pessimistic to expect lockdowns after 8 months from now. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 12:10, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
- We feel that it was a prudent decision not to fund group gatherings. Our goal is to keep people safe. We would rather error on the conservative side than putting community members at risk. As you pointed out, many places still don't have the pandemic under control, while it has yet to hit others. Here we have been warned that a second round could be even more severe than the first. The UN's WHO said that easing restrictions doesn't end the pandemic.
- It's difficult though to find ideas for community building projects with no group gatherings. One idea maybe would be to sponsor one or several servers running BigBlueButton (open source video conferencing software) for use by local communities to ensure easy continued regular meetings. For the "Stammtisch"e in Hamburg, someone set it up on his private server for us and it worked really well! Other local communities/chapters might not have the resources, expertise or time to set it up themselves. --Westnordost (talk) 09:56, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
- Another idea for supporting community building would be to sponsor something like https://welcome.openstreetmap.org or an extension to it that focuses on an introduction to OpenStreetMap for individual mappers and community builders. I mean, a very first introduction and overview, something that comes even before the beginner's guide in the wiki or https://learnosm.org. Just an idea --Westnordost (talk) 09:56, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
Deadline
"Project must be shared and discussed widely during the application process, at least on OSMF-talk and with the wider OSM community." - what it does mean exactly? Is it OK to submit project idea now and "discuss widely" it later? Or is any project not already discussed widely is already failing eligibility criteria? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:45, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
- If I understand your question, proposal are due by 10 May 2020. Once the Committee has a chance to review the proposals we will inform the community and ask for their input. Glassman (talk) 22:56, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
What is the next step?
Is it maybe possible to add info how long we have to review proposals (Microgrants/Microgrants_2020#Key_Dates has no date in a future).
How proposals will be reviewed? Some clearly bad ones eliminated, with continued review for other? Or there will be a big internal review with all proposals reviewed at once? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 23:33, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
