Japanese

Hi, Thanks for this.

The Japanese fonts aren't working for me. I updated the device, then pasted the two files as you suggested in the folder. The map shows up, but not the labels. English labels still work fine on other maps.

Would there be something else I can do? I have an Oregon 450. Thanks for any help you could give. Really appreciate it. Traveling to Japan this weekend and was hoping to use the gps.

Cyrillic

Whether support of cyrillics is planned? Current version makes all cyr labels empty (default) or converts into ?-signs (with --latin1)

I would like to, if I knew better how. Are there any Garmin devices that display cyrillics? If there are then I'd need to know what character set they use. Or is transliterating to the latin alphabet a reasonable solution (eg as here [1])? I'm going to need lots of help on this.

I'll help with pleasure :) Only some Nuvi devices have native cyrillics support. Here authors modify firmware to support cyrillic labels. 8-bit encoding with CP-1251 is used. I also can make translit table. Which format do you need?

There are a number of changes that I am trying out in svn under the lang branch. I am splitting it into two.

1. Make sure that something is visible for basic gps devices that only do ascii characters
2. Different code pages. Probably only suitable for a map of a single country.

Try out from svn at http://svn.parabola.me.uk/mkgmap/branches/lang or there is a pre-built one here mkgmap-lang-353.tar.gz.

If you have a GPS that displays cyrillics could you try this out:

java -jar mkgmap.jar --xcode-page=1251 --charset=windows-1251 <file...>

The --charset needs to be the java name for the CP-1251, on linux it is windows-1251 but it may be cp-1251 on windows. Could you also try it without the --xcode-page option

Both ways (with and without --xcode-page) works fine. Here is screenshot

OK cool. That is good to see. Does that device do lower case? I am making everything upper case because thats all a lot of devices can do, but its easy to add a lower case option if that would be useful on more capable devices.

Yes, my device (like most devices) supports lower case, and I prefer maps with lower-case labels. But my device doesn't support cyrillic search. Afaik devices that support it can do search only if labels are upper-case. Imho it would be nice to have option for lower case

I've added files to hold transliteration tables. The format is just the unicode character code point followed by the ascii transliteration of it. I've made a template for the cyrillics here[2]. A reference for the unicode characters is here [3]. If you could fill that in (it doesn't have to be complete) that would be great.

I have filled this table for russian (here, rapidshare, sorry). It is simplified version of BGN/PCGN table

Please note that transliteration can be different for other cyrillic languages (ukrainian, kazakh etc)!

Thanks, I shall add that to mkgmap. So what can we do about the differences between the different languages? There could be an option to select language, but what if you wanted to produce a general purpose map for everyone? Is there any standard for doing that?

There is a bug with transliteration (r381). You use only first letter from table, but some letters must be converted into sequence. For example, russian "Ч" must be transliterated as "CH", not "C". --Liosha 08:23, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

I think you can use this table as default for most cyrillic languages (after adding non-russian letters). But there would be much more problems with east-asian languages  :)

Chinese

Just want to check if Chinese support in Mkgmap?

I tried a few methods: Adding --charset=cp-1200 or --charset=cp-936

However still got the unrecognized name for name using Chinese.Boyamyxia

To do this will require someone with a Chinese GPSr to help, since I do not know what encoding is used by Garmin in their devices. I have a few ideas and I can perhaps try them and put up maps for people to try out, but if someone has any help to give it will be much appreciated. ..Steve AcousticNewt 22:49, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
