Move to user namespace
I recommend moving this to your user page space, Rtfm, since this appears to be a personally-selected list of tags which is incomplete. Would that be fine? --Jeisenbe (talk) 07:24, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
- The same should go for the tourism tag overview article also. --Adamant1 (talk) 09:36, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Jeisenbe: I don't think that makes sense. Do you think an overview is useless to the community ? Or what else is the motivation of this proposal ? In case you feel there are tags missing, just add them. user:rtfm Rtfm (talk) 12:11, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
- It's a lot of work to maintain the 100's of wiki pages which already have been made. If you want to make a page with a curated (hand-picked) list of tags, that's a good use for your user space, e.g. User_Rtfm/Namespace_tag_overview. Otherwise, I think you have a responsibility to make a complete page which presents a neutral position, based on the facts, rather than opinions. In this case, the facts are "what tags are commonly used and widely accepted by mappers." --Jeisenbe (talk) 14:05, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Jeisenbe: define "commonly used and widely accepted by mappers." user:rtfm Rtfm (talk) 14:41, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
- That depends on the tag: for example, man_made=obelisk is used less than 1000 times, but it appears that a large percentage or even a majority of world-wide features which match the definition of this tag are already mapped. On the other hand, the recently newly approved tag waterway=tidal_channel was used under 1000 times before it was voted on, and it is now used 2500 times. These are small numbers compared to the many 1000s or millions of tidal channels in the world, so it is not really commonly used yet, but it is on Map Features because the proposal was discussed and approved by the community. Now it is supported by JOSM and perhaps by other editors, which is also a sign that community acceptance is increasing, but I don't expect it to be rendered by Openstreetmap Carto until it is more widely used around the world. For property tags, which describe services available at a main feature, it will again depend on how common the main feature is in the world. A tag for services at embassies, like diplomatic:services:immigrant_visas=*, is never going to be used more than a few thousand times, because there are fewer than 10,000 embassies in the world. But a tag like service:bicycle:repair=* could be used a million times, since there are over a million bicycle shops in the world. Also, service:bicycle:repair=* needed a proposal because it was an alternative to the tag service=* which has previously been used: even a relatively common tag should not be considered to be "widely accepted by mappers" if there is an alternative tag which is also common. In these situations, a proposal and community discussion are a good way o achieve consensus about the best tag to use. --Jeisenbe (talk) 00:18, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
- Since it's been almost a month and RTFM is incapable of actually dealing with the problems in the article for some reason, I suggest it just be deleted. If there are no objections, I will put up a deletion request banner on it. He's had more then enough time to fix the neutrality issues. --Adamant1 (talk) 00:33, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

- I redirected it as a duplicate of an existing article and doomed to be a maintenance sink without a clear benefit. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:59, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
- re revert my claim is that there is no need for such page. Namespace is enough to explain the concept and give examples. Additional collection of more examples in poorly readable tables is not helpful. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 18:53, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
