Preferences in Routing Bikes and Pedestrians

I'm working with someone who is using plotaroute to test out bike navigation around campus and we're running into the problem that certain highway=footway are giving messages like "get off your bike here." I'm actually only know this because the other person has an account with plotaroute and I don't. Does anyone have a good idea of the preferences plotaroute uses to route bike and pedestrians around?
