bicycle parking

I suggest one of these two pictograms for bicycle parking:

The second one looks nice and is very cloth to our idea :) Will see if we can add this to the current mapnik style --!i! 19:32, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Should we design our own pictograms for the different sports (e.g. based on the very popular pictograms from the Olympic Games Munich 1972) or should we take the graphics from WikiMedia Commons? --DINENISO 17:55, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Two reasons I can think of: 1) makes the map less chaotic, and easy to scan for certain categories of POIs (eg because all travel-related stuff is the same color) and 2) Since there are only a few colors for icons, these colors can be unique, and therefore be guaranteed to be visible on top of anything (without needing extra space for a shadow/border/background/etc. -- JasonWoof 15:19, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

There is an icon for shop=butcher in SVN, but it's not activated in the stylesheet.

Hi ALE, well I asked the maintainers of the OSM.org mapnik instance for adding more icons [1] and made a TRAC ticket [2] but nothing happened till today :( I have no clue how we can speed up this process without arguing the guys by telling them what to do ;) --!i! 10:14, 13 September 2010 (BST)

Oh dear. I had hoped that the people responsible for installing icons to mapnik were already on board with this before the POTW started. Oh well. Guess the next step is to bug them and start discussions, etc.. I think this will take some persistence. !i!, I hope you're up for it. Also I think your bug report isn't in the style that will work. It looks like it is meant to spark a general discussion. It is not written in such a way that anybody could tell when it has been completed. I think it is useful to get those points looked at, but I think what is more likely to get results, would be something more specific, like "please add shop=car_repair from the POTW". Since we now know (from Ldp on the forum thread) that the team wants considerable thought (and probably agreement) to happen before they add an icon, we should probably provide the place for that specific (to the icon) discussion to happen. IRC might work for this, if you can catch steve8 some time, then paste the useful part of the discussion into the trac ticket so people see that he's into it. The POTW was just an idea of mine and suddenly Richard tells me to write it down ;) So no nobody was ob board, if so I would knew the refs to the original SVG Sources and wouldn't have done this POTW ^^

So what is your concrete idea? Telling the team what exactly to add? IMHO Steve is just responsibile for the service but not for the style, right? Actually I lack of time, would be great if someone else could pay more attention on this thing :( --!i! 08:58, 14 September 2010 (BST)
