Isn't it better to tag them too under this tag unless it has any historic significance? User:muzirian
A shrine can be a huge building. All the giant Shinto shrines in Japan are huge. Some are are about the size of a house. Some are the size of an office building. Many are the size of a garage (thousands of them). This tag is for those buildings - a building built on land set aside just for worship. Wayside_shrines are usually to commentate someone who died (Christian?) or a small natural feature (Shinto) - and are usually the size of a fridge at their largest, a shoebox at their smallest - they are placed along by a road, not the road built for them. Please do not confuse the two tags. They tag very different things. It would be like saying all roadside crosses are churches, so they should share the same tag. But there are many wayside shrines being built now too most of which dont have any historical significance. Just like crosses there are shrines being built at places where there are no roads, how could we tag under historical, which would be very misleading? Also the picture given on the page of this tag is a very small building, so its a bit confusing. --Muzirian (talk) 16:39, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- New shrines are built. New churches are built. People get killed in car accidents every minute of the day, making new roadside shrines in some countries. In Japan, roadside shrines are pretty static, but new statutes get put up. Their lack of history is irrelevant. We are mapping hedges and light poles now. If there are too many (permanent) wayside shrines being rendered at lower zoom levels, then we need to change the rendering, not the mapping. I will fix the picture today - a shrine, however, can be a small building or an extremely large one. Roadside shrines are usually extremely tiny and road adjacent. Its not the rendering I'm worried about.The tag historic is used on objects because they have some historical significance. So tagging small shrines under historic just because they are too small is misleading.If we cant tag them under building=shrine, don't we need a specific tag for them?
For example crosses have separate tags one under historic to tag those with historical importance and
one under man_made for others.
And also like crosses, small shrines are built at places away from roadside .So how can we fit them too under historic=wayside_shrine.What do u think about it?

This building=shrine tag is for Buildings built (and 99% of the time) still operated as a place of worship. If there is an issue with wayside_shrine being in the historic tag space, then it should be moved to man_made or something or a new tag created. That does seem to be an issue. . If it is a memorial for someone - not a shrine to a deity, then it should be something else anyways. This isn't amenity=shrine, this is building=shrine - so it at least needs to be large enough to be tagged as building=yes. People created the wayside shrine (AFAIK) in response to that (they are not buildings). I have seen some really tiny shrines 2x2x1m - but they still allow one person to enter, kneel, and ring a bell in front of whatever they have there.
Think of building=shrine as building=church, building=mosque or building=temple - it is not a catch-all for wayward roadside memorials - just as other Shinto items (gates, and sacred rocks and the permanent ropes braided between interesting things) aren't a building=shrine either. I know that shrine doesn't mean "eastern religion" or the like, but building=shrine outnumbers building=church a hundred to one here. In the rare case there is an actual shrine from an eastern religion in a western city, it shouldn't get confused with a roadside marker or a little roof to cover a stature or a memorial to someone.
