Talk:Tag:craft=atelier
Is "Atelier" a common word for this feature?
In American English I've often heard of "art studios" or an "artist's workshop" or a "design studio", but this was the first I've heard of an "atelier". I see the definition on Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries online is consistent with the tag, but I wonder if there is a more common term for this? --Jeisenbe (talk) 12:35, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
The word is common in other languages, such as German. Maybe this explains the tag's popularity. Osmuser63783 (talk) 12:44, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
Use noun for craftperson, eg artist / fine art painter instead?
Looking at the other values of Key:craft and the main key page, the suggestion is to use a singular now, eg "carpenter", not "carpenters" or "carpenter's" - but an atelier means a workshop and could be used by a fine art painter, sculptor, or other visual artist, or perhaps designer?
There are already craft=sculptor, craft=pottery, craft=printmaker and craft=photographer for several types of visual artists.
The most obvious gap is for fine art painters. Unfortunately craft=painter has been used rather inappropriately for the office of a house painting company (not really a craft). But craft=fine_art_painter could work.
If you want a general tag for any type of artist, how about craft=artist? This would overlap with the 4 visual arts tags above (sculptor, pottery, printmaker and photographer), but it already has been used 50 times per Taginfo. --Jeisenbe (talk) 13:34, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
- I support both your comments: neither does this seem to be a common English term, nor is it suitable for the workings of craft=*, which go by the profession/name of the craftsman. As a third point, art and craft are sometimes distinguished, not sure it means we should use different keys, but I wanted to mention it. —Dieterdreist (talk) 15:41, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
Narrow definition - how to tag an art studio?
I came across this tag when trying to tag an art studio. This Wiki page discourages studio=art but defines craft=atelier narrowly. The page currently reads "The private workshop or art studio of a professional artist in the fine or decorative arts, where a principal master and a number of assistants, students, and apprentices can work together producing pieces of fine art or visual art released under the master's name or supervision." Is this actually how art is produced in the 21st century, under the supervision of a master? How do we tag a studio where an individual artist works alone? What about an artist collective that shares a studio, as equals? What about a shared studio where individual artists can rent space? Should we widen the definition of craft=atelier, is there another tag for this, or do we need a new tag for art studios? How is craft=atelier actually used, does real usage comply with this narrow definition? Osmuser63783 (talk) 12:39, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
