Status

This tag has been used over 1000 times. I think the status of this tag should be "in use". Something B (talk) 21:30, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

I would set it to "deprecated", because the widely-accepted, "de facto" correct tag is amenity=school. Compare: https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/compare/education=school/amenity=school - education=school has been used in scattered places in Ukraine and Russia, but barely used in other countries, and overall it is only 0.1% as common. Furthermore, it is rarely used alone: over 80% of nodes and ways with education=school are also tagged with amenity=school - see https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/14dX versus https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/14dY --Jeisenbe (talk) 06:56, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

But it's not being used as an alternative: it's either used combined with amenity=school or if not usually it means something different. 750 uses are combined with amenity=school vs 150 used without amenity=school, so in the great majority of cases it is being used as an additional tag, not as a different tag instead of amenity=school. I went and looked at most of the ~150 uses without amenity=school, and in most cases these are building=yes with education=school or sometimes building=education with education=school, or sometimes amenity=kindergarten with education=school or something similar to that, so in those cases the current text is wrong: it is not being used to tag a whole primary school, but rather to tag a certain building in a school, or another feature like a preschool or kindergarten.
