Fountain stone block vs. drinking

To me the currently shown examples of stone block fountains seem to match better with fountain=drinking because they have a tap to offer tapping the water. The material stone is only for the stele and doesn't make any difference to the form, function, or use of the fountain. Their structure could also be made of cast iron or wood and they would be the same manner of fountain. The material could be added by material=*. – With the fountain=stone_block I would expect water to run directly out of a stone structure, not particularly suitable for tapping water. E.g. 1)c:File:Makoto Fujiwara - Brunnenplastik.jpg / 2)c:File:Fountain with reptiles and a bird, Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street, 2017 Mátészalka.jpg / 3)c:File:Wuppertal Auf dem Eigen 0001.jpg. – How do you interpret this? --Chris2map (talk) 09:29, 5 November 2024 (UTC)

I agree that all of the current examples are drinking fountains. I would see the "stone block" type as more specific (as "drinking fountain" is very generic, it applies to all instances of the drinking fountains for which we have more specific tags), hence I would prefer it. While mapping many fountains and drinking fountains in my area, "stone blocks" occurred to be a recurring type of fountains, and interesting to map. Ultimately, for most users, the most interesting property of these fountains is amenity=drinking_water or drinking_water=*, the fountain types are more of a niche interest. --Dieterdreist (talk) 10:26, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
That's right, the type is also determined by the combination with either amenity=fountain or amenity=drinking_water. I admit that my thoughts are also based on the fact that I have difficulty with the English term fountain. I always think of a fountain (Springbrunnen) in the sense of a artful or playful water feature (Wasserspiel). The term fountain is used so broadly for completely different objects in real world that it is not easy to describe a particular fountain with a simple schema in OSM. I would expand the tag page with descriptions and examples for both of these cases of amenities (fountain and drinking water). – I also continue to think about tagging of drinking water points with fountain=*. Maybe amenity=drinking_water +man_made=fountain +fountain=stone_block, or amenity=drinking_water +drinking_water:fountain=stone_block, but that's no pretty tag. --Chris2map (talk) 16:38, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
