landuse=apiary?
Is it really a good idea to use such highly specialized landuse value? I would tag it as landuse=farmland + farmland=apiary, to allow typical data consumers to use data Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 09:12, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- I agree in part with you, but keep in mind that beehives are not always located on a farm. Moreover, where I live, normally they are in the wild. Precisely for that reason, their tagging is important, they are close to some paths and it is a factor to be taken into account by hikers seasonally. - Hi! It is reasonable, but the description on landuse=farmland maybe not the best for an apiary: «An area of farmland used for tillage and pasture (animals, vegetables, flowers, fruit growing).» --Daniel Capilla (talk) 09:50, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- I completely agree, this is a poor choice of tag. Apart from small groups of hives kept by hobbyists/small scale beekeepters I think there are serious problems in trying to map apiculture: far too much of it is emphemeral and mobile. Furthermore hives will usually be situated in an area used for other purposes (as suggested by farmyard/farmland). Typical settings I encounter are: in large gardens; in orchards; and at the edge of farmyards. In each case they are a subsidiary part of a different landuse. So in the main I support mapping beehives, and craft=beekeeper, but not landuse=apiary. Other associated use-cases: 1. crops which require insect pollination and which therefore have hives sited nearby during the flowering season. Obviously some crops are not in the same place each year, but others such as orchards are. Usually the pollination syndrome of the plant is well-known, although probably not yet ascertainable from wikidata. Some tag which shows this with a date range might meet this case; 2. Needing to know of existence of bees in natural terrain, seems more appropriate for a hazard tag. So my main objections are: areas are too small, and potentially many areas so mapped will be hard to maintain. SK53 (talk) 11:06, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- Apiaries are not placed in random places. The location of the apiary is strictly legal (distance from schools, public roads, public places) The area occupied by landuse=apiary should be clearly visible on the map. Many people are allergic to bee venom.
- One bee family has about (differences are significant) 10-25 thousand bee workers. Each bee worker can kill a human, an animal that is allergic, suitable small or when it gets to your throat. On the other hand, the areas occupied by the apiary should be clearly visible on the map, unlike military bases which importance for the average user of the map, the tourist is negligible. But it's easy to map them right?
- "far too much of emphemeral and mobile"
- Usually, the beekeeper deals with bees as soon as he has health, strength and time. You can not become a beekeeper by the day or stop beekeeping(you must have local conditions, knowledge, equipment and space). landuse=apiary ist not emphemeral and mobile in contrast to hives. We should map the beehives settled by bees, we should not map unused hives, because they are only ordinary wooden boxesǃ. Cz ja (talk) 13:24, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- "The area occupied by landuse=apiary should be clearly visible on the map" - what is or is not displayed on any map is completely offtopic here. Though note that nearly no maps display locations of apiaries (starting from printed, other online, OSM based maps and other kinds of maps) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 10:27, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
- It is possible that I expressed myself wrong. The area of the apiary should stand out probably on the map, but if it is not important, or fleeting information then not. Time should show if this information is valuable.
- Beekeeping is a special branche of agricultural production. According to me lamduse=apiary fits better than landuse=farmland̹̘̜̜̟+farmland=apiary 1. one tag instead of two, 2. simpler, more intuitive syntax. It has been proposed in the proposal https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/apiary.
- Other special branches of agricultural production, for example: fish farming in ponds, lakes, bays in such cases should be added landuse=farmland too? A catwalk for animals in farm,zoo should contain mandatory landuse=farmland too?
- In addition, what SK53 wrote about modern beekeeping is true.Cz ja (talk) 19:00, 01 Febuary 2018 (UTC)
