Distinguish warehouse tags

There are 5 warehouse tags I'm aware of but not 100% sure how to distinguish their use:

  1. amenity=warehouse
  2. building=warehouse
  3. building:use=warehouse
  4. industrial=warehouse
  5. man_made=warehouse

My current evaluation how to use is:

  • 1) amenity=warehouse — don't use.
  • 2) building=warehouse — a building built in the typology of a warehouse; if no additional tagging like building:use also assumed to be used as warehouse???
  • 3) building:use=warehouse — any building that is actually used as a warehouse to store goods.
  • 4) industrial=warehouse — either a site (landuse=industrial) with warehouses built on, or a building (building=industrial) built and used as warehouse.
  • 5) man_made=warehousenot sure: synonym / alternative to building=industrial + industrial=warehouse? (~23 uses of man_made=warehouse, ~740 uses of building=industrial + industrial=warehouse)

I look forward to your opinions! --Chris2map (talk) 17:00, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

  • Note that man_made=warehouse/amenity=warehouse/whatever would be used for tagging warehouse itself has interesting property. There can be warehouse in building which is not building=warehouse - for example someone may be renting space intended for shop/restaurant and using it as a logistical hub for local deliveries. Or single building=warehouse may have multiple separate warehouses. And large warehouses can be mapped as areas including several buildings. These tags are not used widely but warehouses, at least some, are clearly mappable Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 17:32, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
  • "building:use=warehouse — any building that is actually used as a warehouse to store goods." - I would amend it a bit, if only tiny part of building is used this way then I would not apply it. Say, single commercial space at ground level of multistory building used as a warehouse does not make entire building building:use=warehouse or even building:use=residential;warehouse Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 17:34, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

Am I right that you assume the following basic idea: "building=*" only describes the construction, not the use. So "building=*" is not enough to specify the warehouse feature. This could be described, for example, by man_made=warehouse. The designation should therefore be seen in line with man_made=works. "works" for productive building use, "warehouse" for storage one. – However, the usage count of man_made=warehouse is still very low. In other cases, we complain about the status "in use" with 1- and 2-digit uses and change to "proposed" or "undefined". I'm still not sure about the tag and "in use" doesn't feel right to me yet. — Back to the definition of the tag, is it something like that? It describes the "use feature" not the "object feature". And it is either within a building, or it is an area with one or more buildings? – I think it's a bit much for one tag, especially with the area and several buildings. (I hope I express myself somewhat understandably.) --Chris2map (talk) 18:01, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

For status I do not really care is it going to get "in use", "proposed" or no status at all. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:17, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
"I think it's a bit much for one tag" - I think that having separate tags for nodes and separate for areas would not make it easier Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:17, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
