How are windpumps different from regular windmills? Because seems like they are a type of windmill, but not a completely separate thing. Even the file names for the sample images call them "windmills." If it is the case that they are just a type of windmill, then people should tag as normal and add something like windmill:type=windpump. Instead of having a whole different man_made tag for it. Otherwise, it will lead to a lot of miss-tagging and useless tag fragmentation. Even if they are sorta different, I don't think anyone can tell the difference between them from satellite images or even seeing one on the ground anyway. --Adamant1 (talk) 07:12, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the file name of the image on Wikimedia Commons. That file is used on Wikipedia and this wiki as an example of a windpump but not a windmill. The situation is only muddled because American English speakers colloquially call both "windmills", just as we call man_made=masts "towers". [1] shows an example of a windpump in aerial imagery. It does require somewhat high-resolution aerial imagery or street-level imagery to be certain about a windpump versus an electrical tower, but it's quite distinguishable from an actual windmill (or one that mimics it, like at a minigolf course). – Minh Nguyễn ^💬 18:35, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
