Length?

The description says it should be 30cm and shorter, but the picture shows a bump which is more like 1m long. What is correct? --Dieterdreist (talk) 13:27, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

The next level up of traffic_calming=hump says that humps are usually 2-4 meters long. This would mean that there would be no category for latitudinal raised pavement between 0.3 and 2 meters. There is also no mention of the total height of the bump, which I think that height/distance is what truly makes the distinction between bumps, humps, and tables, as it significantly affects the vertical vehicle acceleration. The figure of speed bumps being about 30cm or shorter seems to be derived from the Wikipedia article on speed bumps, which does not provide a source for that figure. However, this archived ITE article on traffic calming measures (cited by that wikipedia article) does provide some numbers on the heights and lengths for speed humps. The measurements given are 3-4 inches, leaning more towards the 3 inch (~7.5cm) end, which is the same range as that given in the Wikipedia article for speed bumps. The length stated in the ITE article for humps of typically 12-14 feet is similar to that given in speed hump of 2-4 m.
All that said, I think that in the in-between range of bumps and humps that the determination should be based on the actual bumpiness. If a short bump has very little rise (say, only about 2 inch, or around 5 cm), maybe it should only be a hump, and similarly, if a longer bump (that would normally be a hump) has a lot of rise (maybe around 5-6 inch, or around 12.5-15 cm), then maybe it should be mapped as a bump. Let me know of your opinions.--Aenet (talk) 19:55, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

Meaning of being mapped on ways?

Around 1% of all traffic_calming=bump are mapped on ways. What is the meaning? Is this for one bump, or does it indicate that somewhere on this way there will be one or more bumps? --Dieterdreist (talk) 13:28, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

Across the road: that must be one bump. Along the road: that must be #Road with bumps!? Jidanni (talk) 22:20, 18 July 2023 (UTC)

Road with bumps

There is this 500 meter long road with about five speed bumps in it, about 100 meters apart. It is shaded by trees so I can't get the exact positions. How can I just tag the road saying "this road contains speed bumps"? Jidanni (talk) 22:18, 18 July 2023 (UTC)

Say how to map

Do we map it like a gate? One node in the middle of the road? Or one line across the road? Jidanni (talk) 17:02, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

I think if it is mapped as a line across the road then the line should have a node that it shares with the road which is also tagged =bump so that routers which consider traffic calming can consider it (of course they could also get that info by checking if the road nodes are in any other ways, but that seems more convoluted to me, but I also don't program routers).--Aenet (talk) 19:20, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
