- I approve the proposal, though would like to see a key:value for dry docks. -- Johndrinkwater 10:23, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
Voting Ended
Should this go through to the features page? Theres 2 votes, but people had their chance, and the voting period has ended. I didn't vote casue I live way to far from the sea to have an opinion on the matter. Ben. 03:23 23 Decemeber 2006 (UTC)
Floating docks?
Should a floating dock be tagged as waterway=dock + floating=yes maybe? unsigned
- I have used dock=* to identify different types of docks, such as drydock, floating dock, etc. dock=floating - dock=drydock - dock=tidal --Skippern 17:29, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
What is a dock in OSM?
The definition at the top of the page is from Wikipedia describing all the things that a dock can mean. Specifically: "1) A dock is an 'enclosed' area of water used for loading, unloading, building or repairing ships. Such a dock may be created by building enclosing harbour walls into an existing natural water space, or by excavation within what would otherwise be dry land. 2) A dock is a narrow basin that can be flooded and drained to allow a load to come to rest on a dry platform. 3) A dock may be also a tidal harbour with closing doors to hold out or in the water."
Can we be a bit more specific? Personally, I have seen it used for "an 'enclosed' area of water used for loading, unloading, building or repairing ships", although in London it is also used for areas of water which were originally constructed for such purposes and are now used for leisure craft.
I have created this map on ITO Map showing usage of waterway=dock.

- I have simplified the description to cover all the type of dock identified by the dock=* tag. Is that ok with people? PeterIto 17:43, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Permanently dry docks
Docks may be kept free of water on a regular basis, for instance for exposition of a historic vessel. Rendering the dock area as water would be misleading in this case. Should an additional tag be spent, for instance "state=empty"? --Ipofanes (talk) 08:23, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
Hovercraft Landings / Docks?
in mapping some military areas, I've run into large areas for hovercraft docking - looks pretty much like a runway apron and includes a slipway for transitioning from water to pavement - I imagine there are some non-military ones out there as well
typical craft type: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air-cushioned_landing_craft example in OSM: https://osm.org/go/TPU68_7t
wondering if dock = hovercraft or landing_craft would be appropriate?

- For me this highway=service, area=yes. OSM uses the term "pier" for the landing zones of ships and not "dock". You can use waterway=pier, pier=hovercraft_landing_zone as idea... --EinKonstanzer (talk) 14:50, 25 July 2020 (UTC)
Change to use the natural/water schema?
As enclosed water features "has largely been replaced by natural=water + water=river", what, if any, are the reasons for maintaining 'dock' as a waterway? --DaveF63 (talk) 13:05, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
- I would appreciate if we keep discussion to one page, Talk:Key:waterway#Change_Docks_to_use_the_natural=water_schema?. --- Kovposch (talk) 11:06, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
- A couple of topic above above it is mentioned in Talk:Tag:waterway=dock#Permanently_dry_docks "Docks may be kept free of water on a regular basis, for instance for exposition of a historic vessel." This is the case of most dock=drydock features (which are designed to by dry so that the hull a boat or ship can be inspected or repaired) and all dock=floating features (which are a type of moveable vessel which normally floates on top of the water, but which can be submerged temporarily to load or unload a boat). Also in Talk:Tag:waterway=dock#What_is_a_dock_in_OSM.3F it is mentioned that this page originally copied the description from wikipedia, which included "a narrow basin that can be flooded and drained to allow a load to come to rest on a dry platform" (i.e. dry dock), and it was simplified to the current description in 2012.-- Jeisenbe (talk) 16:05, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
- Also see the discussion in https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/2701 about current usage - which includes many piers and also many harbors which are not docks according to the definition on this page. We should update the description of this page to more accurately state the different ways that this tag is currently used --Jeisenbe (talk) 16:07, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
Update description to include current usage
The description was simplified in 2012 to a water area, however, that is not the only usage of this tag. Many features with the tag are dry docks or floating (dry) docks which are normally dry land, or a floating vessel. There are also a large number of harbor areas which do not have lock gates but are tagged with this tag. And there are a number of piers with this tag, probably because the word "dock" is used as a synonym for "pier" in North American English - all the uses in my city are like this. Search for waterway=dock + man_made=pier for scores of examples. Usage is even more diverse in places where English is not the main language. In Italy the first few instances I found were for swimming pools and ponds in quarries, and a small marina. And there there is https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/306834561 which is tagged dock=drydock but is as actually a harbor bearth / slip. --Jeisenbe (talk) 16:20, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
- These objects are tagged incorrectly. do not update the documentation to represent the incorrectly tagged objects. the meaning of the dock tag is clear, but its usage is rampant with bad tagging. --SherbetS (talk) 18:03, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- Are you claiming that the "how to map" section of this page has been wrong? There are established tags mentioned for dry docks and floating docks: "dock=drydock - Usually a maintenance dock where ships can enter to do inspections and maintenance on the wet surface of the hull. dock=floating - Floating docks are usually a large floating structure with the purpose to lift a vessel out of the water for maintenance or inspections of the wet surface of the hull." Neither of these types of docks are areas of water. The 2 tags have been used 1166 times, compared to 6701 total waterway=dock features: https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/dock#values - it is clear that this is a well-established use for the tag waterway=dock. Dry docks and floating dry docks are not filled with water (except sometimes for the rare time when a boat enters or leaves the dry dock). --Jeisenbe (talk) 00:41, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- Okay, if dry docks are like you say and are very infrequently filled with water, would you be in support of changing the rendering of the dock tag so that it can be more clear that it is a dry dock and not just water like it is currently rendered? --SherbetS (talk) 17:26, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
- If you mention rendering - please mention which one. Though changing specific rendering is quite offtopic here Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 13:14, 10 May 2022 (UTC)
