highway page changes
Hi there,
the highway page has been recently modified by Dieterdreist, who has changed the content from highway is a physical property to highway is a subjective importance. Can you please care for a revert? Thanks. There has been no proposal about the change. --Lulu-Ann 22:22, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Wiki ignore mode
In the "Vandalism Response", what about adding the Wiki ignore mode - where the user gets a success code on any edits, but the edits aren't actually saved. Or, they could be silently redirected to modify only the dev server data? - subsequent edits by that user would show his previously bogus edits in the data. MikeN 15:37, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Definition of "vandalism"
I've seen more and more people over-using the word "vandalism", and accusing people of vandalism in situations where the word is too strong and doesn't fit to my mind. In a real world situation, the word is used to describe people graffitiing or slashing the seats on the bus. It's a destructive act, deliberately aimed at causing damage, but rather childish and blatantly anti-social. In a virtual community I would reserve the word for similarly outlandish acts of destructiveness.
So for example the case Lulu-Ann is mentioning above, even if I agreed with her on the details of that tagging dispute (haven't looked into it) I wouldn't describe Dieterdreist as a vandal. He's not deliberately damaging things and then running off laughing. He may be deemed to be causing damage, by failing to work towards a consensus, pushing his point of view too heavily, and not being civil, but this is a point of conduct within a heated community debate. It's not an act of "vandalism".
As such I think we should maybe rename this page to formulate some more general, and less heavily worded, "code of conduct" type rules. We might decide then have a page on vandalism which is just talking about extreme acts of deliberate damage and how to deal with them.

- Instead of renaming, for the moment I've renamed the heading which used to be "Types of vandalism" to "Vandalism and other types of bad edits", and added some explanation of.
