Linux distributions

The precise input methods vary between Linux distributions. You can typically use a keyboard layout with a Compose key or one that features macrons, such as the Latvian keyboard layout.

Windows

Windows ships with a Māori keyboard layout. With this keyboard layout you can use the key left of 1 (the backtick key ` on an ANSI layout) to type combining macrons. You can also use the Character Map utility.

macOS

By default modern versions of macOS offer the same character variant popups as iOS/iPad OS: when you hold down the respective vowel key on your keyboard you will see a popup showing various character variants. Select the variant with macrons using Tab or the arrow keys and then confirm your selection with Enter.

Many macOS keyboard layouts also feature a combining macron. The ABC Extended layout has the combining macron mapped to Opt + a. For example, the input sequence Opt + a; e results in ē. The Māori keyboard layout is also included in recent version of macOS.

There is also a character picker in which you can search for all Unicode characters. The character picker can be accessed via the menu bar (Edit > Emoji & Symbols) or with a keyboard shortcut (Cmd + Ctrl + Space). The character picker may not be available in all applications (for example, as of 2021, both JOSM and Firefox do not support it).

Mobile operating systems

Most Latin on-screen keyboards offer variants with macrons after tapping and holding on the respective vowel. You may need to tweak your keyboard or language settings if some vowels with macron are missing.
