Get Cumbria council to release datasets
It would be good to put in some FOI requests to get more open data from the council. For example:
- Road lighting and tree data
- Defibrillator locations
Robert Whittaker has done this for PRoW data.
Climbing crags
Many of the popular trad and sport climbing crags are not well marked in OSM. It would be good to mark them better, including the crag outlines, nearby tree cover and land cover, and the access routes to the crags. Possibly also some kind of reference so UKC can cross reference to them.
See https://www.xctrails.org/map/map.html?trail=6609581&type=allferrata.
Contributions from local events
To get more people involved in OSM editing in the area, it might be possible to try and get event organisers to use and improve the maps for the areas around their events. For example, for fell races or orienteering events, or anything which requires driving to and parking at. Not sure how best to get hold of event organisers to promote this idea though.
Edits for this task will be tagged #CumbriaRoads.
The Lake District is a popular tourist destination. It would be good to ensure that all the A-roads and major tourist routes to, in and around the Lake District have been surveyed in detail, so that driving navigation on them works well. This includes:
- Give way signs, so that nav software doesn’t generate unnecessary lane forks
- Width restrictions, including single track roads or roads with passing places
- Road surface, so people can avoid unpaved tracks
- Parking areas for popular fells
- Speed limits
- Road lighting
- Pavements
- On-road cycle lanes (see also cycle route mapping)
- Destination tagging
- Road lanes and turn lanes
- Passing places
- Incline (for example, on mountain passes)
- Obvious zoning near the road (residential, farmyard, woods, heath)
- Any obvious side roads, including driveways but not including tracks
- Any obvious right-of-way crossings
- Road alignment to satellite imagery
It would probably also be sensible to work through keepright for the A-roads. I realise that various of these A-roads probably won’t be used by tourists, but generally surveying them in detail is not a bad thing to do.

The road data for the progress table below comes from Cumbria council for the A roads. The split of the Lake District into major valleys comes from Wikipedia. The passes are the ‘road’ passes from Wikipedia.

Public transport mapping
Similarly, ensuring that public transport connections in the Lake District have been surveyed in detail would be useful to visitors. This includes bus routes and rail connections. Probably doesn’t need to include the Lakes line around the coast.
See Cumbria bus timetables, Stagecoach’s maps and the UK quarterly project.
Cycle route mapping
National Cycle Route coverage in the Lake District seems to be complete, but more detail could be added on the cycling infrastructure: where are there separate lanes, where are roads narrow, what surface is on the cycle paths, etc.
Electric car charging points
In order to improve accessibility of the Lakes to electric cars, the electric car charging points around the area should be mapped.

Mapping in specific areas
Kendal
- Fix NAPTAN imports for bus stops around Kendal (they are outdated, and many of them have not been tagged properly as bus stops); add bus routes
- Date proposed: 2017-07-03

- Map the new residential areas (4 of them) around Kendal
