I started mapping some footpaths and cyclepaths in Livingston, where I live, after I found out I could load OSM maps onto my Garmin Oregon 450. After running out of paths to add, I traced some houses and added their addresses too. I have also added some local shops and edited all the schools in Livingston to show their grounds and access paths. Lately I have been filling in larger areas with landuse tags like woods and parks.
