Be welcome on my user page. I'm an Italian user and I mostly contribute to the mapping of the Mont Blanc massif and surrounding alpine region. Should you need to contact me, you will be welcome on my talk page.
I'm currently sporadically working on a proposal about the approach for mapping glaciers. I would like to know your opinion: if you have ideas, advice or comments to share you will be welcome on the proposal page and the discussion page. Any contribution is valuable to a wiki project.

It encompasses the communes of Chamonix, Les Houches, Saint-Gervais, Les Contamines, Servoz, Passy, Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval and Vallorcine in France.
And those of Orsières, Bovernier, Martigny-Combe, Martigny, Vernayaz, Évionnaz, Trient, Salvan and Finhaut in Switzerland.
I also occasionally trespass into the Italian commune of Courmayeur.

Some tagging principles I follow around the massif:
- ...apart from some sidewalks in town centres.
- Every unpaved trail is a highway=path.
Using "default" values for tags is a bad idea...
- Every "default" value leads to a loss of information: it becomes impossible to distinguish the default value from a lack of data. So I try to add as many details as possible when tagging objects.
- There are some accepted exceptions, such as the oneway=no tag which isn't generally used.
...but some tags imply some others
- For example, highway=footway implies foot=yes and motor_vehicle=no; if motor vehicles could access a footway, it would no longer be a footway. Those implied tags should be omitted.
Align imagery first!
- A mountain region with abrupt peaks and steep slopes: aerial imagery of the massif is often misaligned or distorted, especially in Switzerland. Luckily, the Imagery Offset Database allows a better alignment. I have created several alignment points for this, be sure to check that the imagery is well placed before starting to map!

Status of some features I care most about:
- Paths and tracks. I have GPS-surveyed most paths, a few are still missing.
- Rivers, streams and waterfalls. The Diosaz watershed, in the center-left of the map, is mostly my work. There are a number of errors inherited from the import of the french cadastre, mostly riverbanks with no water flowing through them.
- Glaciers. While the ice bodies are almost all there with their geometry and name, most glacial tags are still missing (see Proposed_features/Glaciers_tags). I generally follow the glacial retreat in the valley as soon as updated aerial imagery is available.
- Peaks. Almost all there in the right position, some elevations are still missing.
- Landcover. Most forest is mapped, although it lacks the wood type (leaf_type=needleleaved) in most cases. Most bedrock, meadows, wetlands and screes are still missing.
- Locality names. Most are still missing, but there are very good sources on the Web which might be useable.
- Addresses. Most are missing, although in the centre of Les Houches there are quite a few.
- Shops and businesses. I have been mapping some of them in the Chamonix town centre as well as in Argentière, but most aren't there yet.
- Civic amenities. Most important things are done, but smaller facilities are mostly missing. Some chapels are still missing.
- Roads. They're almost all there, with their names. I'm currently working in Switzerland: I ensure the correspondence of the map with the national register (GWR). See also the wonderful tool I use.
