This page is very much in a draft state, it is here now primarily to collect and organize my thoughts.

I believe the greatest benefit of OpenStreetMap is the community that supports it. I believe that community grows and becomes stronger when people have the opportunity to create features, change things, make mistakes and generally use OSM as a way to learn more about the world around them. When this happens to people, they build a connection to OSM and they take pride and responsibility for the OSM data.

This pride and responsibility is what keeps people coming back to OpenStreetMap. The benefit to OpenStreetMap is that these people then work to ensure that not only is there a whole lot of data in OSM, but more importantly that the data is accurate and up to date now and remains so in the future.
