Upload of JOSM icons
Hi,
I saw that you recently uploaded a bunch of JOSM icons. First of all, thank you for categorising them. However, there is actually no need to upload images from the JOSM repository, because you can just include them as external images like http://josm.openstreetmap.de/export/15255/josm/trunk/images/bug.png
. I also set up a template for that called {{External image}}. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 10:58, 18 July 2019 (UTC)
A solution
Hello, I've been considering the use of {{External image}} but eventually decided against it for a few reasons:
- the image base URL you suggest aren't necessarily permanent. Particularly, if JOSM decides to change from SVN to
git
(for which there are very compelling reasons to), these URLs will probably get taken down after some time. Having a local copy solves that issue. - it forces a fixed image revision (based on the SVN revision index), whereas wiki-copied images can be updated for all pages using it without inuring the cost of possibly hundreds of edits
- should an icon name change in the repo, all pages referring to an old name will need updating if the visual changes. A local copy allows for visual update of an outdated name and provides a way (through image page templates) to mark said image as deprecated, prompting the use of the newer name for future edits, but not requiring name change edits by themselves.
You got me thinking however, and I think I'm going to use a middle ground I'll create for use in pages: a {{JOSM Icon}} template, on which only the symbolic icon name will be specified. Should the storage pattern change, the template will provide an indirection layer and allow for "careless" JOSM icon insertion in pages' contents.
Note that unless you (or somebody else) can come up with a compelling argument as to why icons shouldn't be uploaded to the wiki as local copies, I will keep uploading them for use through the template, which in its first iteration will use the local files, as, so far, using the remote SVN repo URLs is impossible without having some level of time-induced breakage somewhere (SVN revisions changes over time, and so can icon filenames).

- Sounds like a good solution given the reasoning. One request from my side though: If you upload the images here, please add the license to it. JOSM's license seems to be missing in the list of choices for licenses, but you can still add it in the description text box using one of the templates of Category:Media license templates. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 11:28, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
file
Hi. On your userpage you use File:Mobile phone OSM.png, a file which is about to be deleted. You can replace it with File:Mobile-phone-16.svg. maro21 22:21, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
