Map Features

Tolle Arbeit!

'used combinations in' links broken

On Template:ValueDescription the 'used combinations in' links are broken at the moment. Problem on your website? Not sure what they normally show. -- Harry Wood 09:57, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the information. Was indeed a problem with my webspace (played a bit with the apache yesterday night and made a small mistake) should work now again. --Etric Celine 10:52, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Pages about tagging - wiki page naming conventions

Yeah good work tidying up the pages all about tagging. I was pondering attacking this task myself. I held back a little bit because I wondering about page naming conventions.

Follow my reasoning here...

The name Key:highway/motorway was presumably chosen becomes it automatically becomes listed as a sub-page under Key:highway.

BUT the name seems wrong because it is not just a key. highway=motorway is a key-value pair, otherwise known as a "tag". We can even use Template:Tag to refer to it, so highway becomes highway=motorway. The convention seems to be to use an '=' character between key and value. So the page name is also inconsistent in featuring a '/' character.

I would suggest we name a page like this as Tag:highway=motorway, or even just highway=motorway. Simple is better with wiki page names.

The fact that this would no longer be a sub-page of Key:highway is not really a problem in my opinion. We just need to explicitly link to its "parent" key page, rather than having it happen automatically.

Thought I'd mention this to you directly, since you are maybe in the process of making lots of these pages. Ideally I suppose we would have wiki "Page Naming Conventions" somewhere.

-- Harry Wood 14:58, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Good point you have. I didn't realized that Key:highway/motorway could be misinterpreted in this way. But you are right from this point of view highway=motorway is a more reasonable page name.
To be consistent with the naming we could use
this would as well solve the bad page name when we start to translate the tags (de:Keys:highway/motorway becomes de:highway=motorway)
--Etric Celine 16:32, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
One problem with my suggestion actually... Mediawiki will allow a link such as highway=motorway but the page name will always get converted to "Highway=motorway" with capitalised first letter. hmmm didn't think of that until just now.
That might cause people to start capitalising thier key names in the map data, which is wrong (I think... or does capitalisation not officially matter?) From that point of view, the longer "Tag:highway=motorway" would work better.

Hey, that's an excellent job you're doing. Keep it up! -- Fröstel 22:23, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I was a bit bored and seeing your work on the map features, I thought I would have a go. I didn't mean to try a take over from you or push in, I think what you are doing is great and makes things so much more clear :-). I did some work on Tag:waterway=drain. If it is wrong feel free to change it how you want, Hopefully it is not and it is another tag for you to cross off your list. --pray4mojo 21:30, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

map features cleanup

hi etric, thanks for cleaning up new map features after they've been approved, it's good to see someone get on to it so quick after the vote is finished. cheers Myfanwy 20:50, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Template wiki memory problems

I've had to disable the template inclusions on Map Features because (at the moment at least) they are causing out-of-memory errors as the wiki processes them all.

This is a fairly urgent thing we should try to fix. Obviously it doesn't look too good cosmetically speaking, at the moment, and also it's difficult to search. It has also meant that a lot of translated information is lost, temporarily until we solve this.

There are two angles on the problem. I suspect that the server genuinely is low on memory, because back on Saturday it seemed to slow down and die all together, which surely means it's not too healthy, so I'm hoping that one of the System Administratorss is actually investigating, but I guess I should contact them directly to check if they're doing anything. But the other thing is perhaps we can scale back on the tree of template inclusions we have set up there.

This is why I'm asking you. Any ideas how this can be simplified? I'm afraid I'm not sure what type of thing is using a lot of memory particularly, but I imagine it must be the sheer number of included templates. I'm thinking one idea is might be to avoid using IconNode, IconWay, and IconArea everywhere, just reference the images more directly.

You could head over to this forum discussion on the matter too: http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=597

Map Features:highway:traffic_calming

I just see that you added 8 new entries about traffic_calming in the main map features table highway. I think we should limit the amount of values to the 'yes' value in the main table with a comment offering the other possible values in the detailed page and move other possible values in this subpage, like e.g. the building tag. Managing Map Features using Semantic MediaWiki

Hi, I'd like to start a discussion on whether and how we could adopt Semantic MediaWiki for gardening map features, the discussion is here. I think the concept is now pretty stable and we have a [working prototype. Do you know about other wiki gardeners or sysops we should get in touch with in order to push this forward? highway=platform

Missing file information

Hello! And thanks for your upload - but some extra info is necessary.

Sorry for bothering you about this, but it is important to know source of the uploaded files.

Are you the author of image File:Bremen train.jpg ?

Or is it copied from some other place (which one?)?

Please, add this info to the file page - something like "I took this photo" or "downloaded from -website link-" or "I took this screeshot of program XYZ".

Doing this would be already very useful.

Licensing - photos

In case that you are the author of the image: Would you agree to open licensing of this image, allowing its use by anyone (similarly to your OSM edits)?

In case where it is a photo you (except relatively rare cases) author can make it available under a specific free license.

Would you be OK with CC0 (it allows use without attribution or any other requirement)?

Or do you prefer to require attribution and some other things using CC-BY-SA-4.0?

If you are the author: Please add CC0-self to the file page to publish the image under CC0 license.

You can also use to publish under CC-BY-SA-4.0 license.

Once you add missing data - please remove from the file page.

Licensing - other images

If it is not a photo situation gets a bit more complicated.

See Drafts/Media file license chart that may help.

note: if you took screenshot of program made by someone else, screenshot of OSM editor with aerial imagery: then licensing of that elements also matter and you are not a sole author.

note: If you downloaded image made by someone else then you are NOT the author.

Note that in cases where photo is a screenshot of some software interface: usually it is needed to handle also copyright of software itself.

Note that in cases where aerial imagery is present: also licensing of an aerial imagery matter.

Help

Feel free to ask for help if you need it - you can do it for example by asking on Talk:Wiki: new topic.

Please ask there if you are not sure what is the proper next step. Especially when you are uploading files that are not your own work or are derivative work (screenshots, composition of images, using aerial imagery etc).

If you are interested in wider discussion about handling licencing at OSM Wiki, see this thread.
