Wyoming/Railroads
Like highways, railroad tracks have been imported from TIGER data and they share the same problems like unconnected segments, wrong tagging, missing bridges and railroad crossings and positions that are frequently off quite a lot. So a TIGER Review is necessary as it is for highways. Due to recent wiki and associated software upgrades, the map details are not-quite-correct. To fix, please select "Transport Map" from the upper-right "layers stack" icon to see Wyoming rail infrastructure networks and stations. As this is a "live" slippy map, it can be panned and zoomed.
Introduction
This is an early wiki for railroads in Wyoming, both freight and passenger. It likely has minor errors as it remains under construction and awaits TIGER Review to be completed. Please endeavor to complete TIGER Review, the Abandoned and Disused sections (updating status in tables) and areas noted as Incomplete or "needs work." The Wyoming State Rail Plan by Wyoming's Department of Transportation displays wider-zoomed rail maps and contains much statistical data about rail in the state.
Active lines
Lines that see regular rail traffic. Try this Overpass Turbo query, noting that OT queries are easy to edit. For example, you could change "main" to "branch" or "industrial" and run the query again.
The majority of the 1745 miles of active rail in Wyoming are owned by two major U.S. railroad operators, or Class I railroads: BNSF and UP. Together they own 1738 miles of track, nearly all the rail in the state. The total of Class I track includes 106 miles of track owned and operated jointly between BNSF and UP in the Southern Powder River Basin coal production area; 106 miles are accounted for in the BNSF and UP figures but are counted once for the total. A Class II railroad is Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern Railroad (RCPE) which owns 7 miles in Wyoming.
There may be additional minor spurs (especially usage=industrial) which are not entered in this wiki. Please endeavor to both correctly tag these in OSM (including completing TIGER Review) and document them here.
It may be correct to assign maxspeed=* values in mph to segments based on FRA Track Class. Feedback indicates these can and do include segments with curves much too sharp to support such a maximum speed and asks for data of "better granularity." Yes to both. Better granularity data are better.
Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway (BNSF)
BNSF is a Class I railroad, one of two in Wyoming (the other is UP). It owns 965 miles of trackage in Wyoming and has trackage rights on an additional 5 miles in the state.

Bighorn Divide & Wyoming Railway (BDW)
BDW had its genesis in the Bad Water Line, a railroad operation launched by Bonneville Transloaders, Inc., of Riverton. The Bad Water Line saved former Chicago & North Western Transportation Company (C&NW) trackage from abandonment between Riverton and Shoshoni in 1988. The Bad Water Line subsequently retreated to a short segment between Shoshoni and Bonneville, became the Bad Water Railway in 2000, expanded operations to a new isolated line built between Lysite and Lost Cabin to the east of Shoshoni in 2001 and was acquired by Shoshoni-based BDW in 2002. In 2009, BDW began operations at the Casper Logistics Hub (CLH)/CTRAN (Casper), not contiguous to the rest of the BDW network. This is a transloading, trucking, erecting, storage and warehousing facility 7 miles northwest of Casper managed by CTRAN and operated by BDW. The 700-acre facility features 41,200 feet of track (32,700 feet for transloading purposes) and 500 railcar spots. It can accommodate lumber, petroleum products, frac sand, casing, coated pipe, cement, soda ash and wind turbines. CLH is the largest transload facility along the BNSF network between Denver, Colorado and Billings, Montana, and offers strategic access to the Casper–Natrona County International Airport, the Foreign Trade Zone and principal U.S. and interstate highways. The mainstay of BDW's business is transloading (truck to rail and vice versa) and transporting bulk products to BNSF interchanges for furtherance to destinations nationwide. A significant transloading infrastructure is maintained on the property, including ground space and silos for storage, conveyors and belts for movement of material and rail and truck scales. Principal outbound commodities are molten sulfur and soda ash (trucked in from the Green River area), petroleum products, inbound frac sand and barite for use by local drilling interests, pipe, shingles, lumber and urea.
BDW accesses the isolated Lost Cabin Line via 21 miles of trackage rights over BNSF’s Casper Subdivision between Shobon (Bonneville) and Lysite. BDW transloads molten sulfur at the ConocoPhillips gas plant and assembles unit trains at Bonneville Rail Yard for BNSF. Interchange with BNSF occurs at Shobon (Bonneville) and Bishop (Casper). In BDW’s operation involving customer and yard switching, train movements are made not to exceed 10 mph, although the maximum authorized speed on the BNSF Casper Subdivision over which the BDW has trackage rights is 40 mph.

Swan Ranch Railroad (SRRR)
SRRR is a subsidiary of short-line and regional railroad conglomerate Watco Transportation Services of Pittsburg, Kansas. SRRR operates on 17,192 feet of track and switches the Cheyenne Logistics Hub, which is the first phase of Granite Peak Development’s 7,200-acre SWAN Ranch Industrial Park situated near the intersection of the BNSF and UP networks and Interstates 25 and 80 on the southwest side of Cheyenne. The park contains transloading facilities as well as sites for energy companies and manufacturers. The railroad’s traffic is primarily crude oil and asphalt oil. SRRR handled about 450 carloads in 2012.

Additional industrial railroads (various, private)
Industrial railroads exist in Wyoming to provide intraplant and interplant rail switching service to industrial and manufacturing customers and to coordinate and facilitate carload interchange with Class I railroads. These small carriers typically operate over private track on company property; they can be owned and operated by the company that they serve or can be operated under a contract agreement with an outside party. Rail Link, a division of regional and short-line railroad conglomerate Genesee and Wyoming, offers a full range of rail-related contract services to industrial customers nationwide, including switching, track and locomotive maintenance, railcar repairs, train tracking and monitoring and in-plant trailer and container drayage. Included in its network is an extensive array of rail switching operations on privately owned trackage to coal mines throughout the Powder River Basin coal-production area. As part of this service, Rail Link provides unit train loading and inspections and coordinates all train movements into and out of the mines with BNSF and UP through BNSF’s dispatching center in Fort Worth, Texas. Here are Rail Link Industrial Rail Operations in Wyoming:
Eagle Butte – Alpha Natural Resources
Rawhide Mine – Peabody Energy
Buckskin Mine – Kiewit
Caballo Mine – Peabody Energy
Belle Ayr – Alpha Natural Resources
Cordero Rojo Mine – Cloud Peak Energy
Coal Creek Mine – Arch Coal
Black Thunder East – Arch Coal
Black Thunder West – Arch Coal
Black Thunder – Arch Coal
North Antelope Rochelle Mine – Peabody Energy
South Antelope Mine – Cloud Peak Energy
Progress Rail Services is a subsidiary of heavy-equipment manufacturer Caterpillar and provides switching services to an industrial park at Rock Springs and for BNSF near Bill.
Watco Transportation Services of Pittsburg, Kansas, began providing industrial switching services to Solvay Chemicals near Green River in 2008.
Other industrial plants across the state have similar rail operations. For example, Pacific Power & Light operates its own 16-mile industrial rail line to shuttle coal from a strip mine south to the Dave Johnston Power Plant near Glenrock.
Privately owned railcar repair shops exist in Wyoming to maintain equipment used to transport freight originating in or passing through the state. These facilities can handle repairs on railroad-owned and privately owned railcars and are situated in the following locations:
- Bill: Progress Rail Services handles contract railcar repair.
- Evanston: Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) Shop Number 113 handles contract rail car repair.
- Rock Springs: Progress Rail Services handles contract rail car repair for UP.
- Shoshoni: Bonneville Transloaders opened a railcar shop and repair facility adjacent to the BDW network at Shoshoni in 2006. The facility is operated by Diametic and is a full-service tank car shop that also maintains cars for BDW.
Disused lines
There is some rail tagged railway=disused in Wyoming. Try this OT query to find these.
Abandoned lines
There is a substantial amount of rail tagged railway=abandoned in Wyoming. Try this OT query and help to complete a table here! This may also yield some present-day Railtrails (see section below).
Railtrails
A railtrail uses a former railroad right-of-way (ROW) for equestrian, bicycle or hiking paths, preserving the ROW for possible future re-use as a railway while providing a useful service in the meantime. These are often tagged highway=cycleway or highway=footway depending on whether they prefer or allow bicycle or pedestrian traffic. It is OK to tag both railway=abandoned and highway=cycleway if it is the case that an abandoned railway became a railtrail (for bicycle use, for example). Where a (multi-use) pathway is designated for pedestrians but also allows bicycles, tag highway=footway and bicycle=yes.
There will often be significant overlap between the Abandoned and Railtrails sections. Do your best to keep them "synced" though it can sometimes be a coin-toss whether something properly belongs in one or the other. If it is an active pedestrian, equestrian, mountain bike or bicycle trail, it goes here. If it is an abandoned rail ROW only, not allowing trespassing, it goes into the Abandoned section.
If you find a railtrail that needs to be added, updated or improved, please do so!

Passenger trains
Tracks and stations used for passenger train routes are correctly collected into route=train relations. There is an earlier (with simpler structure) "version 1" method to do this that involves simply "tracks and stations" being in the relation. There is a later "version 2" method which is more complex and requires the exact stop position of the train, platforms for passengers, full "directionality" for each aspect of the train's travel, and a super-relation to tie these together. Please see this wiki section for full details on how to "upgrade" a public_transport:version=1 route=train relation to public_transport:version=2.
Try OpenPublicTransportMap (OPTM): it displays passenger rail in route=train relations. At closer zooms, OPTM also displays route=light_rail, route=subway, route=tram, route=monorail, route=funicular, route=bus, route=trolleybus, route=aerialway and route=ferry with colors similar to ORM. Please compare and contrast ORM (rail infrastructure) and OPTM (passenger routes) with OSM's Transport layer which rather simply displays "any and all rail" (railway=*), though not disused or abandoned rail, and at closer zooms, route=bus. Here was another rail renderer which displayed rail-based passenger routes with their colour=* or color=* tag (no longer functional, it was handy on Amtrak).
As of 2018, there are no long-distance, intercity corridor, commuter-rail, light-rail, tram, monorail other other similar passenger transit services in Wyoming.
Historic, heritage, museum, tourism, mining (passenger=local) trains
A single tourist railroad provides the only passenger rail service in Wyoming. Terry Bison Ranch, located south of Cheyenne, is a standard-gauge rail line that straddles the Wyoming-Colorado state border on an alignment not previously used for railroad purposes. It is about 2 miles long and began operations in 2004. The ranch rail line is not a component of the national rail network, nor does it physically connect with any other rail carrier’s network. All of its equipment, including six locomotives, was privately constructed on ranch property. The ranch advertised in May 2013 that it operates regular tour trains every day except Christmas Day and operates a Sunday lunch train during the summer.
A first table might contain the route=railway relation.
(Table goes here)
A second table might contain the route=train relation. Current online/printed schedules are useful sources to develop this in OSM.
(Table goes here)
Depending on similar Wyoming rail facilities, create a new section/table for amusement park rail. California has substantial amusement park rail (and similar private rail), California/Railroads' section on Tourism rail struggles with similar categorization and tagging. Map your best, wiki your best!
Yards
It would be very kind for more OSM volunteers to continue to build up this statewide "Yards" table with status on every single Wyoming rail yard. Let's complete it! Additionally, there are industrial parks and transload facilities in Wyoming which might go into a separate table here (see "Additional industrial railroads" section).
