About proposing a project

Please propose something which meets many guidelines as possible:

  • A Project of the Week should be suitable for participation by all OpenStreetMap contributors.
  • A Project of the Week should improve the map.
  • A Project of the Week should use best practices for mapping.
  • A Project of the Week should inform, entertain, educate, delight, motivate, enthrall and inspire new and experienced mappers.
  • A Project of the Week should be suitable for mappers with a few minutes or mappers with more time to contribute.

Proposals

Date Specific

Suggest an international and inclusive, date related mapping activity. Is Arbor Day the best time to map trees? Should chocolate shops be mapped for Valentine's Day? Is there an International day of the Zoo? Let's plan these as far in advance as possible.

  • National Park Week, April 16-24, 2011, is an annual week long celebration and recognition of the U.S. National Parks. Everyone loves the U.S. National Parks, afrom Yosemite, to the Grand Canyon and Rocky Mountain National Park (to name a few :)) It is a great system of places for locals and visitors from all over the world to experience recreational opportunities, see wildlife up close, learn about flora/fauna and to just get away from it all.
  • November 15th? Geography Awareness Week - Map rivers in your area. Trace streams from OS_OpenData_StreetView(UK), rivers from aerial imagery, or go out and confirm if it's right. For larger rivers, add the river banks. This year's theme focusses on freshwater.   • November 11th / Armistice Day. (A national holiday in many european countries and marked in Britian and elsewhere.) Add memorials to those killed in wars and conflicts (tag as historic=memorial,name=*). For instance, the Obelisk at North Bridge here. Other possibilities would be to map military cemeteries and war grave sites (for instance sunk ships). There is a lot of information on the web from various groups, such as veterans associations, but much of this may be subject to copyright/derivation restrictions. An approach has been made to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission regarding sites in Belgium, but it is not clear that appropriate permissions were granted (see mailing lists). The ability to make use of such information would improve the ability of remote users to participate. SK53 10:55, 18 September 2010 (BST)

  • We did power lines in April 2010. On the other hand we did World Cup I and World Cup II only two months apart. I'm not sure how soon is "too soon" to repeat a topic without specific motivation like the World Cup event. Thoughts on this everybody? Rw 13:35, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
  • We haven't done anything with lit=yes, yet as far as I recall. FK270673 would you like to write this up as a guest project?   • Add all local lit=yes/no/.... The latest versions of JOSM now includes the tag lit=* on many of the highways types. It still not very used so far, but a map of the world "by night" is already visible on toolserver. Apart from highways, the tag "lit" can also be used on other OSM nodes and surfaces, like parkings, artworks, buildings,...

Not only, but admittedly they'll have more of these around. Things like scrubs, scree or grass between the motorway and nearby housing, even between link roads, or between the river and the fields, that undeveloped patch inside a suburb (not quite a park, not wood either - or it could be).   • Map a railway station, big or small. Platforms, shops, stairs. Inspired when I saw Newcastle Station had the newly installed ticket barriers mapped as gates (should they have a capacity/number tag?). Some surveying could even be done from the train as you pass by. -LastGrape/Gregory

New OSM editing tutorial: Adding your address to OSM using Bing and Potlatch2 (specific to a detatched house, this will be followed by apartment blocks & terraced housing tutorials. samlarsen1 10:47, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
  • FIXME week: check your surrounding for FIXME tags, find out what's wrong and fix as many problems as your time allows. (You may find that many problems have already been fixed a long time ago and that people just forgot to remove the tag. In that case, you can still make a useful contribution by removing that confusing error mark!)
  • Mentoring week: find a novice contributor in your area (e.g. check out the recent /history pages for user names you haven't seen before, then look at their /user pages) and offer your help in getting started with OSM (tagging conventions, editor usage, things left to_do, ...). Declined? Find another. (Iterate if necessary.)
  • Crossroads: every user goes to their local crossroads(es) and surveys whatever is in each of the corners between the ways: if it's a house, addr:housenumber=* + an address would be survey'd; this would further house coverage. There might be a postbox in one corner and a corner shop offering bike maintenance in the other → amenity=post_box, operator=*, collection_times=* in one corner; shop=bicycle, addr:housenumber=*, ...etc. in the other. The characteristics of the crossroads (cycleway=asl, crossing=pedestrian_scramble, etc.) could also be survey'd. —Kevin Steinhardt 20:14, 2 September 2010 (BST)

  • Are housing developments going up near you? Is there a sales office? Get one of their marketing maps while asking permission to copy. When new homeowners move-in, let OSM be the first to have a map they can send to visiting friends.
Here's a variation of the previous one (which was not my idea). Even when a new housing area has already been finished (or at least some of the roads), it may still take months to appear on Google and the like - so we may still win the race. Ride around the area on your bike (or just walk) with your GPS receiver recording your track; at home, draw the roads. (One track may not give perfect accuracy, but at this stage - who cares? You can still refine the roads later, put a FIXME on them if you're too concerned.) Print some copies of a little map covering the area - with a huge OSM logo and URL on it -, return to the place and drop your maps in people's letter boxes. (So don't forget to roughly count the number of houses while you're there.) That adds a component of increasing OSM's popularity. Oli-Wan 15:03, 15 September 2010 (BST)

  • Jobs. In the current economic climate places used to find employment opportunities seem to be relevant. To my mind these would cover public 'employment exchanges' (old UK term) and private/for-profit employment agencies. In many countries these are features of the high-street or commercial centre of many towns and cities. The suggested tag would be office=employment_agency. SK53 14:04, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
  • Transport Corridors. Make that regular motorway/railway/canal journey more interesting by recording features visible from the car/train/boat and placing them on OSM (perhaps using aerial imagery). Then we could make nice OSM-based strip maps (see, for example, Matthew Paris' London-Jerusalem itinerary). Bridges, waterways, power lines etc. crossing the route are particularly easy to note, and may well be missing. Along the corridor things like landuse, prominent buildings (churches, mosques and other places of worship; large houses, industrial buildings etc), woods and lakes are all relatively easy to notice and collect. Obviously it is best to do this if a passenger rather than driver. There is also the possibility of producing nice strip maps. The 'download along track' option of JOSM may provide a suitable starting point, or some use of the Douglas–Peucker algorithm. SK53 14:04, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
  • Gyms. This week when I told someone that we had nearly 30000 pubs in OSM for Great Britain, he said "I bet you don't have many gyms", and he was absolutely right (on taginfo 66 409 amenity=pub, 395 amenity=gym).   • CCTV man_made=surveillance: raising awareness about the Big Brother society being built, by improving the global coverage of CCTV locations. May be useful to distinguish between traffic, public and private ones, and provide better rendering tool/site that the ones existing. I think in some countries their position is even public data, so maybe it's possible to directly import some, otherwise it makes for nice urban quests for these nasty eyes.

racetracks

Some say that he has named every blade of grass on the track. But are the corners of your local raceway named? Is it on wikipedia? Would your OSM-following robot get around the track? [6] [7]

and horse tracks too. But please include some tag suggestions and way or area.
I just traced Sandown park which is a horse-race place (and karting). highway=raceway seems to be the tag for these things (dark pink lines in mapnik). Ojw 19:39, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Charity Locations

Tree Lots

  • I think it would be a fun project to map all the temporary tree lots that pop up during the holidays
  • Tags could be shop= tree lot ?
Hi, this was discussed on the german mailinglist one year ago [8], DE:Tag:xmas. Even if it is a very nice idea, it is a little bit off OSM cause of the very limited temporary usage of the objects. I guess the most would like to store it in a seperated database. IMHO therefore it shouldn't be 'promoted' as a POTW :/ --!i! 18:12, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
I'm inclined to say that temporary tree lots are too temporary for OSM in general. My objection to the temporary nature would be overcome if this were part of a proposal for say, "mapping garden centers and places to acquire plants". A recurring tree lot in the garden center parking lot could be added as a tag, I suppose. Rw 13:50, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
Also, Christmas tree lots aren't as inclusive as I'd like PotW to be. By comparison, I'd prefer "map local religious buildings" over "map local buildings of specific religious adherents". Rw 14:02, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Key typo cleanup

What about a cleaning up of missed key names in the dark time of the year? Jochens Taginfo tool showed us that there are a lot of wrong key names. Could be beautified with a explanation text with provoked typos to underline how bad it is for a computer to compensate this bad names. Because we limit it to keys we avoid edit wars on homebrew values because there are only a few possible keys. Might be a POTM and we can ask Jochen if he is willing to support us with gauges during the period. Would be a nice step to show up again how much can be done without bots just by manpower :) --!i! Soll heißen:

Da wir jetzt mit Bing-Luftbildern arbeiten können, machen wir uns an die bisher rar und ungenau erfassten Flüsse, Bäche usw. dieser Welt, ohne das wir in Gummistifeln, Badehose oder sonstwie mit dem wasserdicht verpackten Tracker in der Hand oder auf dem Kopf durch die Natur streifen müssen. Wir bleiben in der warmen Stube, müssen nicht über wasserdichte GPS-Schwimmfahrzeuge und deren Bergung nachdenken, und können bei einem Gläschen etwas für OSM tun. Ganz nebenbei erkennen wir noch fehlende Brücken und nehmen die im "Vorbeischwimmen" mit.

Selbstverständlich ergänzen wir nur dort, wo wir genau wissen oder erkennen, dass da Wasser fließt, bisher aber die oben erwähnten Mühen nich auf uns nehmen wollten.

Und wo was unklar ist... ...im nächsten Frühjahr lockt es uns, unseren Hund und unser Fahrrad wieder nach draußen und wir können am Objekt die Details erforschen.

Local people

Talk with local people (native people). They provide useful information and information that we could not have with only satellite WMS or mapping alone. local name, use of land region, name of buildings, clarify of the tag operator (political concerns that we have to know to tag appropiately the operator, overall in public things). For the other hand, contact with local people could help to increase the interest in OSM in other areas in which it's not know.

Yes. Of course. The (main) idea behind is to get information from local people that it's impossible to obtain from other sources. The knowledge of local people is more important. I think it's the most.--Xan 23:20, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
I'm my opinion, local people have to make the maps of their zones because they have the (main) knowledge for doing it. The other are pretty strangers mapping their zones ;-) --Xan 23:20, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Could be good to do it similar to 'meet mappers' project. Arrange with your local library to be there for 2 hours or so and advertise in advance that help is wanted improving the map of your town/city/area. Have a map printed, but also sit with a computer. So they just need to point and you can do the tricky editing (or show people interested in learning). Use tags like old_name and loc_name, so these can be searched for. Or possibly a 'local' render could be made.

Voting and marking as favourites on help.osm.org

Get people to find some answers that they find interesting on http://help.openstreetmap.org, it would be good to be able to get more people there and to show off good answers. Erik Johansson 23:46, 14th January 2011 (UTC)

Fixing unconnected and duplicated ways

One of the strongest uses of OSM data is to provide automated routing for various types of transport means. However, a quick look at Geofabrik's European routing validation tool shows what stands in the way. Now that Bing backgrounds are present in editors it shouldn't take long to fix the unconnected major roads left erroneous by new OSM editors. This would also put across that point that it is essential to correct connect roads together to make the database more powerful than just visualisation. Care would be needed where relations are affected by overlapping ways. Connecting an unlinked road in a single edit has quite a high impact on the project, though of course not so much as adding new content.

Turn restrictions

I recently heard some complaints that routing for car often suggest routes which are not allowed. I suggest to add turn restrictions. --Michael H 17:43, 27 June 2011 (BST)

3D Buildings

OpenKýbl3DMap, web-based slippy map with 3d buildings and other features
Glosm, fast OpenGL viewer, showing example of specified roof types
Example of city (Rostock) where building heights are already mapped

As there are already several programs that will show OSM data in 3D (Glosm, OpenKýbl3DMap, ... see 3D Development for a nice list), or import them in other programs (for example in FlightGear flight simulator) that takes advantage of 3D data, it would be useful to add such information to as many buildings in the map as possible.

Easiest way to improve is just adding tag height=* which will specify height of the building in meters, or even easier, add building:levels=* which specify number of floors that the building have above ground (including the ground floor) - when exact height is not specified, 3D renderers will guess (usually quite correct) the height based on number of levels.

For more complex buildings, building:min_level=* used on part of the building will specify how many floors are "vacant", i.e building:min_level=2 would mean that the building part starts at third floor, with two lower floors being unoccupied by the building, usually used so pedestrians or other traffic can pass through. (min_height=* is its alternative for exact height of the same in meters)

For buildings without a flat roof, type and shape of the roof can be specified for even nicer (and closer to reality) look in 3D apps.

In my opinion, POTWs should only be started when there is at least vaguely consensus on how something should be tagged, and some application support beyond proof-of-concepts for the feature. I think that building parts aren't mature enough yet, and roof shapes aren't either. But generally, I very much support the idea - just don't schedule it next week. ;) In a few months, this could be an awesome POTW. --Tordanik 22:13, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Yes, it would be better to somehow unite all the building stuff first (part of defined and used tags are in Proposed_features/Building_attributes, some of the used tags are described on various pages of 3D projects, like OSM-3D, some are described in internal documentations of different projects (like the one you get when you checkout glosm from git)), so this is definitely not for next week, but somewhere further in future ... --Bilbo 22:43, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

Turning crossings into complex ones

The most crossings in OSM are tagged with a traffic signal. But mostly there are multiple ones and not one only in the center. So this your task: Pick up a few crossings and make them complex so footways might cross the highways at the right places and add the traffic lights to the nodes. --!i! Japan

I guess due to the desasters in Japan we should all join chrisismapping this week. The POTW might be a milestone by defining a clear mission statement as "add all roads following to BING imagery in the surroundings" by defining what to map, with which imagery (linking them) and what not to map (floods) and how to collaborate (often uploads, using qualitystreetmap). Second Hand Shops

I like the idea of adding individual store/institution types and propose the second hand store.

Perhaps. I see a shared interest with tags for shop=discount, shop=charity, shop=variety_store and shop=second_hand. Each show a similarity in frugality or price-point as focus. What are important tags to go along with shop=second_hand, and how do we distinguish between a shop=clothes and a shop=second_hand that sells clothes? Are there other tag combinations that should be collected for this PotW?
Seeing as I can find none around where I live, I've been wanting to add the charity dropoff/donation bins that are about, though I cannot find any way yet to define them? I don't know of anyone that already has this information either (at least not in Australia) ElderKorean 07:06, 15 May 2011 (BST)

Surely OSM should feature bookstores? Maybe with an additional tag for used books.

How have we not had bookstores yet? I thought we had, but don't see them on the calendar. Yes. We'll do this. Same question as above though, what do we do with a second hand book store? TODO shop=books

Lonely places

There are a lot of unmapped roads in the world. There's service on http://latlon.org/v/lonely that shows a red circle for towns-villages-cities that don't have roads to them. Mapping at least one road to each of them can be done even using Landsat, and will significantly raise the quality of the map.

Mobile apps

For people with smartphones there's a few positive things which people could do around mobile apps. The obvious disadvantage of this idea for a project of the week... is that people without smartphones can't join in :-/

  • Install OpenStreetMap apps. Take the time to install and try out some new apps for your mobile platform (plenty to choose from!)
  • Rate your apps. Give ratings on the itunes store or android market. In general OSMers should rate OSM related apps positively purely on the basis that they're using OpenStreetMap! These apps can suffer negative ratings due users who are unaware of how awesome OpenStreetMap is, and unaware that they could be fixing the map data that they are criticising. Rate positively to counteract this.
  • Document your apps. All apps that do interesting things with OpenStreetMap should have their own page on the OpenStreetMap wiki. You don't need to be the developer of an app to help document it here. Wiki pages here should describe how OSM is being used, and how to activate/reach those features.
  • Contact the authors and thank them for using OpenStreetMap. This may be particularly important in the case of more obscure or new app. Also look for other outreach possibilities. Can you help them answer user questions on a forum somewhere?

...but without a smart-phone you can't join in, so I guess we need to extend this idea somehow.

Zoo mapping

Unleash your inner animal. A few individual zoological gardens have been the fetish and the first micromapped places in OpenStreetMap, but zoo mapping has been slightly forgotten since then. If you have a free day, go for a trip to your local zoo and add every footway and every enclosure with its name and the species information. If you just have a moment add any other missing features in Category:Animals like dog off-leash areas or the veterinary near you.
