Proposal
amenity=mailroom to identify where the shared mailroom is for a university, an apartment building complex, or a commercial office building complex.
Elements: nodes, areas, relations. It may be used as an attribute on a building (being an area or relation) indicating it contains the mailroom. Or may be an attribute on a node within a building outline, identifying the location within the building.
Rationale
Package delivery drivers, students, professors, and rental tenants need to know where the mailroom (package delivery room) is for their multi-building complex. It is not obvious where it is by just driving around, especially if the complex is large or the mailroom is separate from the main/leasing office (which may be marked by office=property_management). Many complexes have a mailroom, and some even have multiple mailrooms, e.g. a separate mailroom for heavy/bulky deliveries.
Tagging
- Definition: mailroom for receiving packages or letters at a university, an apartment building complex, or a commercial office building complex.
- Elements tagged: on buildings (areas, or relations in the case of a building with atrium holes), or individual nodes indicating where within a large building the mailroom is located.
- Comparison: Note that this is different than Tag:amenity=parcel locker, which is for public facing kiosks with electronic locks controlling each cabinet. Usually a mailroom is either attended or operates within an organization based on trust, not individual locks per package.
- Additional tags used in combination: Key:opening hours during which delivery drivers can deliver or university staff/students can receive; apartment tenants can usually access it 24 hours per day.
Examples
People have already started identifying mailrooms in a variety of ad hoc ways, often by placing the word "mailroom" or "Mailroom" in the name tag, sometimes as part of other text:
- https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/432308751 name=mailroom on a building marked building=industrial
- https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/174250060 name=mailroom on a building marked building=university
- https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/8838028506 name="Technology Programs, Mailroom" on a node within a large building at a university
- https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/424007085 name=mailroom on a building marked building=yes as a free-standing mailroom building within an apartment complex
- Here is an aerial view of that free-standing mailroom within the apartment complex: https://www.bing.com/maps?osid=e33a9c99-7ec7-4606-bc95-bc7c5c0b056a&cp=39.945647~-105.12081&lvl=22&dir=180&style=g&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027
- https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/651841589 name=mailroom on a free-standing building at Wilina Ranch Apartments
- https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/382753733 name="Merrill College Mailroom" on an area that represents a portion of a larger building
or sometimes already using the proposed tag amenity=mailroom:
- https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/8906216154 node within a large building labeled "Corporation Warehouse (82)"
- https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/8904457215 node within a large building labeled "Humanities Building" within a college campus
- https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/8904392061 node within a large college building
- https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/152161958 building way with building=university and name="Central Receiving"

Rendering
Anyone have an idea for an icon? It seems that name=mailroom already shows a particular icon that shows a letter envelope; maybe should show a package.
Features/Pages affected
Key:amenity would add an entry under section 3.8 Facilities just alphabetically above (and logically near) amenity=parcel_locker
Add a "see also" entry on Tag:amenity=parcel locker , which is for a public locker instead.

Thanks, everyone. Someday someone may want to design an icon for this that shows a package.

- I oppose this proposal. Seems like the existing amenity=letter_box can be used instead, which already has examples for multiple mailboxes in one location. --JeroenvanderGun (talk) 20:34, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
- But there truly have such special building that receive all mails, then teachers and students take their's when they have time. For example:Mailroom(收发室) in Tsinghua Univ.--快乐的老鼠宝宝 (talk) 22:23, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

- I approve this proposal. Although I agree with JeroenvanderGun that there is some potential overlap between this tag and amenity=letter_box, but I don't think it's enough to reject the proposal outright. Maybe just make a note of the differences between the tags in their articles. IMO it seems like amenity=letter_box is more for outdoor mail boxes that people are depositing incoming mail to specific addresses in. Since that's essentially what the tags description says it's for. To me that's different then a room solely dedicated to sorting mail, which might or might not have a letter box, but really probably wouldn't. Although again there is some potential for overlap even if it is extremely small. Maybe in those cases the room could be mapped with this tag and the specific boxes as amenity=letter_box? I don't see why not. Otherwise the alternative would be what, something like building:part=mailroom? Muh. I'll pass. --Adamant1 (talk) 00:22, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
