proposing explicit sub-tags
I like this proposal but I think some parts of it should be extended. Especially the type-part. I suggest to use a subtag "vehicle" which defines the deposited vehicles.
- vehicle=car
- vehicle=bus
- vehicle=train
- vehicle=truck
- vehicle=bicycle
(or something similar) and a subtag for the "purpose" of the stored vehicles (service, snow-removing, road maintenance, tourism, public transport, stolen vehicles, sequestrated vehicles, vehicles from traffic infringers, ...) and a tagging approach for additional services/facilities (maintenance, repairs, ...) -- Dieterdreist 14:33, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

building=garage

Yes, but not as landuse
This is a kind of amenity. What ever the dopot is for. Hardware, food, trains, parcels, building materials, etc.
amenity=depot
depot=food (or hardware, PTVs, parcels, logistic,...)
Concerning landuse this is 'industrial' or 'comercial' or maybe 'retail'.

Industrial seems most likely. Should be tagged as: building=depot depot=* (vehicle, goods) if vehicle: vehicle=* --DCTrans 21:02, 11 October 2015 (EDT)
Depot is not a kind of amenity. A Depot is needing e.g. by City administration for trams or Companies for Container.
Amenity Description: For describing useful and important facilities for visitors and residents.

Agreed with broad sense depot
We need this sort of landuse=depot for multiple things. It's very common for government departments to keep uncovered depots as for construction materials, pipelines, huge electric pieces, masts, etc. Not only for vehicles. Also if for vehicles it should be included in the general class of depots. Sergio (talk) 02:33, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
