I am from Costa Rica, and this sounds like a really useful feature for directions here. We have prominent places that are used to aid in finding other not so prominent places, and this is the de-facto standard for directions because the names and numbers of streets are not properly displayed and it's a real mess. For example, we have: "Next to the Farolito roundabout", "In the Amargura street", "100 m south of Radio U".

A lot of this has an historical sense. I think that this should be complemented with a tag that includes the names of prominent things that were located in the same place in the past. Some common examples from here are the "Pulpería la Luz" (Light minimarket or something like that), named like this because it was one of the few places to have electric light in the old days, and that's now a Bagelmen's. Or the "Gallito roundabout", named after a factory that was next to the roundabout. The factory was demolished and the roundabout is now a weird set of traffic lights. A real example taken from the Internetz: 100 m north of the old Pulpería la Luz, 30 m west.

So +1 to the referece_point tag to make it easier to find directions and make routing easier in places like Costa Rica. --Elopio 18:55, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

I put an example there. Everything should be abstractly marked as an reference point. So a simple "yes" is fine. The name of the reference point should be reflected in the name tag. xamanu (talk) 04:42, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Should the example not be in Spanish? name=poco arbolito and name:en=Little Tree for a Spanish language country? Brycenesbitt (talk) 05:02, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
