The tag nonsquare=yes was created to inform the iD validator that the tagged building should not have warnings show up about it not being square. For buildings without the tag, iD will create a warning if the buildings' corners are almost 90 degree angles (but aren't), the building isn't attached to any other buildings, and the building doesn't have a large number of nodes. Users who select an almost square building will be prompted to square the building, tag as unsquare, or ignore the issue.
Rationale
The new iD validation system for buildings that were almost square would sometimes create false positives, so in order to ensure that those buildings in OSM that actually didn't have perfectly square angles in the real world wouldn't accidentally become messed up by OSM contributors, the tag nonsquare=yes was created to prevent validation warnings from showing up.
