Road Classification

I would like to know if there is some general agreement about how to assign highway tags to different kinds of roads. Most A roads seem to have been classified as trunk while B roads are distributed between primary and secondary highways. And there are quite a few places where people designated residential roads as motorways.

In many other countries trunk is reserved for dual-lane highways which are not designated as motorways/expressways and primary/secondary/tertiary would mostly go along some official road hierarchy. An overview over this is presented in Highway:International_equivalence. If local mappers agree on a scheme to be applied for Sri Lanka this main country page might be an appropriate place to mention it as well as a line in the equivalence table. --Michael63 (talk) 15:20, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
