This page doesn't really offer any information beyond what's already on leisure=golf_course. This kind of duplication should generally be avoided in the wiki, as it will sooner or later lead to diverging and contradictory information (for example, this page is already subtly different in that it doesn't mention that natural=water should only be used for the part of the hazard actually containing water). It also increases the mainenance effort, and makes it harder to watch the wiki for problematic changes. --Tordanik 15:26, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
- The page should have much more detail! It needs to be expanded with explanations and links to surface where the hazard way totally encloses the hazard or natural=* where the hazard way does not confirm to the land cover. Not just water
Hazards may not be just water. Better to just use the value 'lateral_hazard' and leave the nature of the hazard to either a surface=water/mud/* tag or a separate area with natural=water/mud/* Warin61 (talk) 06:17, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
vs natural=water

- In golf a lateral water hazard is defined as the area outside of a line of red stakes. In some cases the "water hazard" area is larger than the actual limits of the area of open water. Sometimes it might be a natural=wetland area, other times there areas that are official considered part of the water hazard but do not actually get filled with water. It's also possible to have intermittent areas of water which are not officially a water hazard. - Apparently the rules change last year to allow non-water areas, like heavy reeds or tall desert vegetation, to be treated the same as water areas: https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/rules-hub/rules-modernization/major-changes/areas-the-committee-may-mark-as-penalty-areas.html - but I don't think OpenStreetMap needs to change our tags for now, though perhaps golf=penalty_area makes more sense for a penalty area which does not contain water?
