Is this tag also suitable for municipal or regional government offices? Of course there is amenity=townhall, but there are many more administrative buildings at local or regional level, e.g.:
- youth welfare office
- registration of address office (de: Einwohnermeldeamt)
- municipal school administration

- I agree. For example customs and immigration offices. Very important information for people who sail around the world. What about an tag called goverment=* that could be for example goverment=immigration or goverment=welfare or so on?

Raised with the tagging group for their consideration sub tag government= or, better government:department=* as this allows for one office doing more than one function. missing government types
There are other government office types at national level:
- presidency ("white house", presidential palace, ...), kingdom palace
- official residences in foreign countries (technically not the same as embassies or consulates, they are oftren related to official representants in international organizations)
- national assembly, senate or other legislative bodies
- various assemblies (economic council, constitutional council...)
- prefectures (regional representants of the national state, different from the offices for local councils and their administration)
Is there an attempt to classify them ? At least they should all be office=government (plus some tag indicating their level of operation: national, state, regional, local)
Unfortunately these are not shown on OSM.org Mapnik map, which does not even recognize at least "office=government" to at least display a generic icon and the name. — Verdy_p (talk) 10:02, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
How to use tags for non-office government facility
Do government facilities that are not offices also use this tag? I'm having trouble tagging government-owned warehouse and garage sites or storage areas without buildings. --Otenkiya (talk) 22:19, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- No, this tag is only for government offices. The ownership of a feature is not usually tagged, but if an industrial area or garage is operated by a certain government, this could be tagged with operator=*, e.g. amenity=parking + parking=multi-storey + operator=Municipality of Townsville for a multi-level parking garage operated by the imaginary "Municipality of Townsville". --Jeisenbe (talk) 05:05, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

- Do you have some specific examples? Generally in OpenStreetMap, every feature, represented by a node or area or way, needs to have a tag which specifies what kind of thing it is. It should be possible to verify this by visiting the location in person, especially if you are a local who knows the area well. For example, for industrial warehouses see landuse=industrial + industrial=warehouse, and building=warehouse for each structure. For "storage areas without buildings", it depends on what is being stored. There's man_made=bunker_silo for 3-sided, unroofed features used to store grain or grave or sillage. Space agency?
There are two rare tags for space agency offices: https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/government=space_agency and https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/government=aerospace - is there a reason to prefer one over the other? --Jeisenbe (talk) 07:07, 27 December 2020 (UTC)
- Indeed, this require clarification because there is a common misunderstanding, even in official names. Aerospace refers to both Aeronautical/Aeronautics and Space/Astronautics if you look at the dictionnary definition. Some governmental agencies apply to both Aeronautical and Space (such as NASA) while others apply only to space (such as JAXA, CNES, CSA...) or only to aeronautics (such as FAA, AESA, DGAC...). Others are about Transportation, with a wide meaning (usually excluding space since it's not a common tranportation mean but including aeronautical, train, cars...). It has to be seen as a hierarchy, Aerospace being a node and not a leaf. Space is a leaf of Aerospace. Can we first agree on that? Then the question is which level of detail we want. IMHO such distinction is not problematic at all since it is true and can be verified. However space might be better than space_agency to be consistent with other values. Consequently we would have space, aeronautical or aerospace (and probably transportation). What do you think? I guess that most of government=space_agency usage is from changesets of mine so I'm ok to make changes if it can improve consistency. Reguarding the fact that there is no dedicated page I think this is not a big deal since such key=value association is quite straightforward and self-explanatory to start with.
